I voted M-14 because it is really little more than an M-1 garand with a full auto selector switch. Obviously the action is more than that, but the general design is a take off on the M-1. I actually heard thta a numbe of Marine units were being outfitted with M-14's refitted with synthetic stocks. Now how cool is that!

I voted the m-16
I do not have any experience with the others so my opinion may be a little biased.
I do have experience with the m-16 and as a general infintry weapon I wouldnt want anything else (other than a SAW or 240gulf). It is light weight easy to maintain and at the 500 yard line I could put 3 out of 5 in the head of a silouette target with all five in the black. I kept mine clean and hade very little "Tap Rack Banging" going on (unless firing blanks). Some may argue with me there but I havent hade much trouble with the sand or mud in this weapon. M-16 is also compatible with the SAW. Therefore, if the squad auto rifle man runs out he can recon a magazine from another fire team member slap it in the side and continue to send rounds down range. Like wise, if the rifle man is out and time permiting he can break down the SAW belt and now have a full mag.
You cant go wrong with a basic infintry fire team being armed with the m-16 and a SAW. Any time anywhere.
Hay, bottom line if I have to hump it, the rifle must be LIGHT dependible and accurate.

alright here is a break down they are all good guns the question is do you need full auto or 20-30 rounds in one mag a m-1 garand is ok out to a 1,000 yards depending on the shooter 8 round compasity internal mag very reliable in most weather conditions . the m-14 another 1,000 yard rifle well built 20 round mags were army standard after market you get up to 40 round mags this is pretty much the same weight as the garand depending on what mag you use over 8 pounds then the m-16 / ar-15 if cleaned often will fire out to 800 yards with a compatant shooter behind it army uses 30 rnd mags there are 5,8,10,20,30,40,and 100 rnd mags available on the civilian side for them but just like the smaller m-4 they are more likley to jamp than a m-1 garand or m-14 the m-16 weight is considerably lighter than a m-1 or m-14 and the m-4 is a litle lighter than the m-16 a common problem with the m-16 and m-4 are that dust sand and any other debrise that they are near will cause them to have jaming issues no matter how much you clean them my personal prefference is a m-249 saw that is the weapon i have caried for 2 years in iraq and have never had any problem with it every one in my gun truck has had jams on well maintaned m-4 and m-16s that are cleaned daily at minimal we go out on the road doing convoy escort every day and i will not use any thing other than a saw because my unit doesnt have m-14s if they had them that would be my choice

I was trained with the first three but have had nothing to do with the m-4. I favor the M-14. Both it and the M-1 have the problem of large heavy ammunition. However both are simple problem free rifles that can take bad weather and dirt better than the M-1

Hey, 98 ranger! I can see why you'd like the SAW so much. Anything belt fed that you can hand carry is going to be pretty formidable! You guys using shotguns at all or did they stop using those altogether?

Hope you stay safe and kick ##*%* out there!

I would say the most reliable was the M-14. If you were to have asked my grandfather he would have said the 03 Springfield.

why yes we are still using shot guns out here mostly mossberg 500s in many diferent configurations but 12 gage and they are very reliable and effective out here the one i dont get is the beretta 92 fs is a real crapy caliber not the most effective by far but it scars the enemy just like the shoty does you can be escalating force against a possible attack and point a 240bravo (308 belt fed machine gun) at them and the keep going but a 9mm or shoty and they stop turn and run real quick the saw is so effective because it is easily manuverable and quite accurate out to about 800 meters relisticly even though the book says different and it lays a good layer of suppresive fire when needed i will never willingly give up mine as a gunner for 2 deployments i have not heard or seen any problems with this weapon system that would make me doubt its efficency and russel if i was looking for a good long range sniper rifle i would choose the 03a3 springfield also it may not have all the bell and wistles but it does more than enough to get the job done

I've heard that alot about the 9mm. Not enough stopping power. I still remember reading about the test they used in the early 1900's to determine the effectiveness between the 45 and the 9mm for stopping power by using pig carcasses. the 45 won hands down! You just can't beat the good ol 45 ACP can't ya? Nice to know they are still using shotguns for combat. Nothing like a spray of 00 in close quarters to get the job done!!! I heard the Marines were changing from Mossberg 500's to the Benelli. I think those benelli's are the nuts!

they are still using the 45 acp in some units and the army is talking about switching back to 45 because they are having to many issues with 9mm and most sf type units use the 45 strictly because of stopping power the problem with 9mm is the bullet is going so fast that it goes strait through the bad guy without doing much to stop them i have heard stories of people getting into fights and shoot someone with the 9mm over 10 time and having the bad guy still able to kill the shooter in hand to hand combat

I read something about that, too. It has everything to do with using FMJ slugs instead of some form of expanding hollow point bullet, which is something you aren't supposed to use. I also heard that after about 1,000 rounds, you have to replace the slides on the Berettas as well. Something about the slide cracking and flying off. Not good! Personally, I think you guys would be served well by being issued Springfield XD's. in 45 ACP. 1911's are incredible firearms, but they are only single action. Even a double action version, like the one made by ParaOrd would be much more useful.

m-9 / beretta 9mm model 92 fs i have heard of the slides breaking but usualy after alot more than a thousand rounds more like 10-15 thousand rounds or if they had bad ammo or some other kind of severe abuse to the weapon the bigest problem is the bullet moves so quik even in hollow piont bullets that is goes though the target before it can expand and do any damage its just to fast 4 its own good regardless of what ammo used

I actually heard about the M9 from a fellow at the local gun club who retired from the marines. He was saying that The marines are replacing the slides after 1000 rounds due to the apparent malfunctioning problem. Maybe the marines got hold of a really bad lot? Can't imagine how since all the armed forces used the same side arms and long arms, but you never know.

I can't help but think about those low velocity .44 percussion revolvers and those .577 rifled muskets they used in the civil war and the incredible damage they did. They might not have gone very fast, but they really obliterated everything in their paths. I guess big holes still do more damage than little ones!
