just curious. At 400, 600, 1000 yards, how much meat are you ruining.

Also at a long range contest how is it scored and what is a winning score? In other words how accurrate do you have to be in a long range, big caliber shooting competition?? thanks, Paul Conway.

As far as ruining meat goes.. it really does depend on the caliber, of course. With the .50 bmg, you're going to do some serious damage at long distance. This is because the energy of the bullet at extremely long distance, (1000 yards plus) is going to destroy what you hit. This is what makes it an impractical hunting weapon... I mean, depending on how you load it, powder and bullet weight, you're talkin' 11-13,000 foot/pounds of muzzel energy. It's an awesome sniper round because the bullet won't drift as much and it will fire consistantly. So, very effective for snipers... the longest confirmed kill is 2,657 yards.. that's over a mile and a half. But at long ranges, the bullet is going to arc so greatly that it will literally come down on top of the target and destroy... DESTROY what you hit. So, at shorter distances, you chould get away with using the .50 bmg and I'm going to guess that most who voted "no" on this poll are making that decision because of meat lost... but I know a few guys who use the .50bmg on prarie dogs and coyotes... That's fun to watch.

Someone with more competition experience could answer your target shooting questions better... but at our range, they'll do long distance competitions for small prize money.. I've competed in the 500 and 800 yard antelope shoots... (The target is a Life-size antelope on paper with the target over the vitals.) They scored based on closest to center, and 5 shot group size... They also did a 1,000 yard dynamite shoot. They put a half stick of dynamite inside a coke can. Competitors fire one round at a time at their coke can... (You can tell when it's shot!) but they go until someone hits the dynamite but that's not a standard competition... haha.. just a good-ol' montana redneck dynamite shoot.
