I'll tell ya short range 150 yds or closer I like my 22 Hornet. Longer distance my 22-250. On occassion when they pop out of nowhere within 10 yds I like my 12g.
It all depends on how good of a shot you are, and how you place the bullet.

depends on the shot and the shooter......clean shot and good shooter with a 22 is a deadly combo

22 hornet is a damn nice round. very underrated. I also know a bunch of guys who are up in Maine hunt alot of Yotes with .22-250's. Either or would be plenty, I think

I favor the .17 HMR .... it will do a good amount of damage for a small caliper firearm ... and the accuracy and range is unsurpassable for it's light weight and packability ... I feel comfortable to say I could drop a yote at 250 yards with no problem ... providing the wind is no more than light

well for calling i wouldnt hestitate using the 17hmr, but if you're looking for a good coyote round i would go with the 223. being a military round they're easy to find and cheaper to shoot than a 22-250 or the new popular 204. plus they dont blow the fur up. if you like the hmr you might want to look at the 17 rem more power but dont expect to roll a coyote at 200 yds.

.223 or 22.250 are great round for coyotes. As was said, the .223 is cheaper to shoot.
I wouldn't trust the .17HMR to be a sure kill at 150-200yards on a coyote but if you don't care about coyotes being killed when shot or going off to die later then it won't matter which one you use.

unless you are keeping the hides i would use a 308. they are a very accurate round and little worry of the running off after the shot.
i have used it for 4 years now... if i am wanting to save hides, just put in a full metel jacket in.

if i read your post right you having trouble with them when coon hunting. the states i have lived in limit the caliber/bullet to a rimfire when hunting at night. i just use my .22 pistol. i haven't had any trouble from the coyotes after putting a bullet in them when i was coon hunting.

now if i were to go coyote hunting i would use a different bullet/gun. i prefer the .22 magnum, but have used a .17 hmr and shotgun when night hunting. if i was to hunt them in the daytime i would still probably use my .22 mag, or whatever gun i had handy at the time.

if you are coyote huntin with dogs we use a 12 ga with #4 buckshot that has a range on it about 120 yrds but when they are out that far you have to have some luck on your side too but its not rare to kill them between 80 and 100 yards
