i think what w. walkers was trying to say was that the .223 was originaly isued to snipers in the vietnam war, and has not been offered to the public in bulk for to long. a .223 is to big for squirells (sp) even at long range. there would be no meat left on the animal.
No the 5.56mmNATO is the military round not a .223 besides the 5.56mmNATO was intended as a light infantry weapon never a sniper. Back in vietnam they used either a .30-06 or a .308 known to the military as 7.62mmNATO.
i don't shoot them that far away, but i don't know what would be a good cal. at that range, i guess i alway try to shoot them close or bark them in that is what works for me
i really like my 17mach2, around 6.99 for a box of 50. i shoot coon, rabbit, and even squrrels. the mach 2 will easilly drop one out of a tree 80-100 yds depending a shooting ability. I like my savage, i put a tigger basix trigger on it and pulls around 2lbs. (before they came out with the accutrigger) but i cant say enough about the mach2 and for the 223 leave that for the yotes and fox.
