Is a .223 shooting a 55 grain bullet to strong for 50+ yds shots on squirrel? Just thinking of putting a twist to squirrel hunting!

Is a .223 shooting a 55 grain bullet to strong for 50+ yds shots on squirrel? Just thinking of putting a twist to squirrel hunting!

we use .223 to kill yotes, i think that would blow a squirrel to pieces, even at 50 plus yards. |

not at 50 yards and i think if i wanted to kill a squirrel i wouldn't be shooting from 50 yds. |

OVER KILL.. Why would you want to spend the money on .223 shells 55 grain.... when a 22 caliber would do the job!!! Plus be safer!! |

OVER KILL iven at 100yrds it would to tremends damage. you would have to shoot them in the head if you hit them anywere in the body it will tear them apart.(ive done it with a 223 and a 6mm) and ive shot squirlls at 80+. with my 22. |

.223 is WAY too much gun for squirrels.In fact, a .17 hmr is way too much gun for squirrels.Another thing you have to keep in mind is that a .223 has MUCH more range than a .22, and what goes up must come down.A .22 bullet box SAYS it will travel 1 1/2 miles- I don't think it will, as most .22's begin to drop at about 100 yards, but that was based on something, so I'm sure the same size bullet with 5 times more powder pushing it is gonna fly MUCH farther, not to mention dissintegrate your meat,and why shoot it if there ain't enough left to eat?You wanna have some fun and "snipe" squirrels from long range?Put a bigger scope on your .22 and hone YOUR skills.I built a squirrel "sniper rifle" out of a Remington 597(bull barrel, 3-9x50 scope, and thumbhole stock) and with CCI stingers, 80 plus yard shots are no problem. |

I went out and bought a gamo air rifle just for squirrel hunting,its works like a charm, plus pellets are extremely cheap and pretty safe. I highly recomend trying them out. They do just as well as a .22 |

I've used a 20 gauge with light loads, too. Works like a champ at less than 50 yds |

find u a GOOD .22....i've killed squirrels with head shots at 75 yards with a .22....i found that out by accident....22 will do the job at any distance, if u can see it, u can kill it with a .22 Kevin |

i use a .22mag for about all my varmits, excluding coyotes. It is even to much for squirrels. Blows a nice big hole through them. I would say a .22 would be all you need. |

I wish I had the chance to try. We're limited to hunting squirrels with shotguns here. Even if you don't wind up with puree you tear it all up picking out shot pellets from the meat. |

try using 20 ga light loads. It seems to lessen the "blender effect" |

wow???? way to much powder, that is a military issue ammo, cheap compared to other rifles to shoot but way over kill on squirrels, i would use a solid tip 22 or a 17 mach 2 they are great squirrel guns and they work good on coon also, if u shoot a squirell with any thing that is moving faster than 1500 fps it does to much damage unless u leave the little rats where they lay. JMO |

WINNEBAGO, you are incorrect. The military uses a a different style of 223. The hunting 223 is a high pressure round and the military 5.56NATO isn't. If you try to use 5.56NATO in a 223 it will get stuck. If you try to use 223 in a 5.56NATO it will fit in the magazines but because it is a high pressure round it can cause many problemS with your 5.56NATO gun. JUST SO YOU KNOW.
