We carry one of each when we hunt. The 17 drops coon like a bad habit LOL,......but the downside we have observed is the 17 tears the heck out a hide. The guy we sell furs to even commented about it. Of course the fur damage could be caused partly by the type of bullet my brother shoots too........he isn't to particular when buying his bullets and he picked up a box of balistic tip bullets (can't be good LOL).

i have a marlin model 70PSS 22 LR i like it a lot its very light pretty accurate got a nice little scope on it a handgun doesnt really work here to well it sure is nice carrying but when your shooting 75-85 feet sometimes after that ringtail its hard to hit with handgun thats why i like that marlin its small and light

The 22 is a long time classic but man i love my 17hmr that gun would kill anything i guess it depends on my mood the only downfall around my neck of the woods is thet the 17 is a bit louder.

I carry a Crickett too, Weighs around 2lbs and doesn't snag on every tree I walk by. I was toting a Marlin .22 with stainless barrel but it's to heavy and I have wanted to throw it in the dirt plenty of times.

i use a .22 LR or sometimes a pistol.... i dont always try to kill the coon. Sometimes i like to see my dogs fight one thats already good and mad. i thinks it helps the dogs.

I like to use my 30-06 at times to get them 40 lbers. out of the tree! I got a Savage .17 cal That never fails to kill a coon on the first shot. Use the CCI's 20 grain bullets the v-max bullets tear the crap out of a coon.

"In my opinion" the best all around small game(squrriels up to coyotes)would have to be the .22 wmr- Not to much for squirrel but strong enough to knock out coyotes.
