I'm looking to get a new semi auto .22 and have narrowed it down to these two. I'm not looking to build a custom platform, I'm going to use it to squirrel and coon hunt with. Any thoughts or recomendations would be helpful

The Remington 597 is a great little gun, but the only complaint I have with it is the chintzy clips they have. They work just fine, only made with poor quality, but you can buy them nearly anywhere if one craps out on you. The 10/22 is the best .22 ever made and its sales speak for itself. The only knock I would put on the 10/22 only pertains to the newer ones. They have this dumb elongated clip release that is directly in front of the trigger guard. When you pull up on a critter quickly it is common to accidentally drop the clip. I have done it and I have seen others do it as well. I also do not like the new birch stocks that they come with because they are made out of a softer wood with a cheaper finish on them. My advice would be to find a used older 10/22 with a walnut stock. You can't go wrong and it will last you for forever.

I have both. Don't waste your $$$ on the 597. Find yourself an older used 10/22. They're hard to beat.

A very good rifle to hunt with is a marlin 60 tube feed auto. with a mirco barrel that don't wear out, lot cheaper than a 10-22,I have 2 trapped with for years thrown in the boat and never failed. lite to carry put a cheap scope and you are in business.

Thanks for all the input, i'm lookin around local gun shops for a used 10/22 now. I have a Mossberg 17hmr bolt gun that I love already, so i dont really feel the need to get a 22 magnum. just a comment on the marlin 60, i had a synthetic one that i bought new 2 years ago that wouldnt cycle the cheap bulk long rifles that i normally use, i dont know if I just got a lemon or if it was a design flaw. just wanted to throw in my 2 cents
