I have used my shotgun on many occasions. It works great in pine trees.

If you want the dogs to fight the coon use a .410. It knocks the coon out without really hurting it. If you want to kill it in the tree, just about any gun you are comfortable using will work unless you want to tan the hides then I would not recommend a shotgun.

How bad is a 12 guage on the hide? I'm guessing its not too bad since your a good 30 Ish yards shooting in a tree right? Also, anybody ever used a 410 slug? Or is that too much for headshots

Never saw a standard 410 that could send a slug where you want it to go! Slug too much for coon anyway. Never used a shot-gun on a coon. 22, head shot and you got a good hide.
