me and my friends are dicussing what gun would be better to hunt with. I say 30 06 and a couple of my friends say 300 win. mag. I tell them that you just dont reall y need something that powerful to hunt with, it just hurts you. A 30 06 will do anything a 300 can do and it goes just as far. what do you think?

sounds bout right to me.....i feel like the 30 06 is powerful enough to take care of any big game in north america. 300 win mag is overkill

I would have to disagree yes the 06 will take on any game in the lower 48 there are still times where i would choose the 300

to me its like asking why would you choose a 22 mag ove a 22 both will take down small game the 22 mag will just do it cleaner at longer range

its more so how comfortable you are with your rifle. 10 grains in the right spot will do more damage then many times that in the wrong place

30-06 you cant beat the ole '06. The cartridges are cheaper and there is no other rifle caliber on the market with as many different bullet loads from the factory, you can get as light as 55gr up to 220gr and everything in between. Yea the 300 shots a little flatter, but you will never see a difference out to about 200-250 yrds. But then again this is one of them topics where you will have so many different opinions, really just personal prefference.

Which ever one you want or like, as for me i alternate between my .270 Win. and 30-06, love them both the same, a national poll was done a couple of years ago and the round of the century was the 30-06 ! Bullet placement and the best bullets you can afford is the key to accuracy and one shot kills ! Amen ???

I watch the outdoor channel here and there and i was just curious why a 270 win. 30-06 and cartridges in this class by some say there not enough caliber for elk and moose when guys on the channel is shooting elk and moose and sometime a grizzly with a bow ! So don"t you think that shot placement is one of the biggest key factors ?

they are nearly the same so it becomes a choice of personal preference ... like using a big hammer or a size bigger hammer...

the best thing is that a 30 06 can be used on a coyote to a moose.

The older I get, the more I like my 243. In the open field it is all you need down here, now in the woods or brush-you better have a clean shot.

As a hand loader, YOu can get 30-06 brass alot cheaper and it can do anything you need it to as long as you do your part.
The 30-06 it cheaper if you don't hand load. Both rounds are very flexable if you load your own as they are both 30 cal one of the most popular rounds. You can load a 300 Win mag with a 110gr hollow point just as easy as a 30-06. You get a lil flatter shooting round witht the 300 Win mag and with that does come some better terminal ballistics. I know a 30-06 can, will and has taken every form of north American Big game. Same for the 300 Win Mag. If I were to choose one rifle of the two I would pick (and have in my vauly 8) the 3006. I'm a big fan of it ammo is everyplace and affordable. YOu can still pick up mil-surp. All the power in the world won't make a diffreance if its not placed right by the shooter. Now IF I were to go out for a big Grizzly bear and had to choose between the two the Win Mag would go. It's nice to have that lil extra umph. However I would feel underguned with the 30-06. Both are fine cartridges sure the 300 win mag has extra umph but to me its not really worth it.

The 300 is a better elk gun if you are shooting 500yrds you have the knock down and with a boss muzzel break you dont have the kick and they are sweet shooting caliber
