I went to the Fish and Game Commission meeting on April 9 in Lodi. They were taking public input on opening bear hunting in San Luis Obispo County and removing the in season harvest quota closure for bear season. I nervously stood before the commission with my hastily written speech on why I opposed the removal of the quota. I think that it opens Fish and Game to lawsuits by animal rights groups claiming California will now allow the wholesale slaughter of bears with no restraitnts. The season limit was only reached twice in the last six years incurring the expense of notifying 30000 tag holders by mail that bear season has closed early. We don't need the letters. We could be like Nevada cougar hunters and call in or check a web page( which is already available in CA) Let us take a little more responsiblility for bear conservation. One or two hundred bears over the 1700 won't cause any ill effects for California's still expanding bear population. So in reality it is a moot point. The commission was in favor of opening San Luis Obispo County. One NIMBY from Friends of the Forest showed up to oppose the hunting bears in their county but his comments seemed to fall on deaf ears. The commission was more interested in "expanding recreational oppurtunities" than the rants of anti-hunters. I was the only hunter there besides some suits from CHC. Overall it seemed to be a positive for bear hunters and very interesting to watch the people who control our sport work. Can't wait till season. Pete Meyer
