Fight Back Against Threats To Dog Ownership
The American Sporting Dog Alliance is six months old! We have grown rapidly and our work thus far has taken us to 16 states to defend dog owners against threats from animal rights legislation.
We need to grow even faster.
Animal rights groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) have been organizing for many years, while dog owners have silently trusted elected officials to protect our rights.
This strategy worked in the past, when lawmakers understood the relationship between animals and people, and cared about preserving the rights of dog owners. This no longer is true. Dog owners now have become marginalized as a “special interest group” in American politics.
We know that is not true. We know that we are mainstream America.
But many politicians have forgotten.
PETA and HSUS have launched unprecedented attacks against us this year in virtually every state, and in more than 100 counties and cities. They have millions of dollars to spend to attack us, have won media support from reporters and celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, have infiltrated local boards and commissions, and have a nationwide network of local groups backed up by hundreds of paid employees.
Thus far in 2007-2008, we have fought them to a standstill!!!!!!!!
We worked to block horrible legislation and regulations in Pennsylvania. We canceled out plans to infiltrate Connecticut schools, social service agencies and courtrooms with the animal rights agenda. We helped to defeat draconian kennel legislation in Wisconsin and Oklahoma, and mandatory spay and neuter ordinances in Santa Barbara and Kern counties in California. We also have bottled up two anti-dog-owner bills in the Ohio legislature, and won major improvements in Virginia kennel legislation.
We have proven that we can beat PETA and HSUS, which threw their biggest guns and millions of dollars into these battles.
However, for every victory we have won, two more battles emerge.
The fight continues in Pennsylvania and Ohio. We are poised to fight and defeat statewide spay and neuter legislation in California. We are in the midst of tough pet sterilization fights in Dallas, Chicago, Arizona and New Mexico. We uncovered and are fighting back against a major legislative sneak attack in New York that would destroy hobby breeders and turn even someone who has four dogs into a “pet dealer.” Legislative battles are continuing in Maine and Virginia, and court action is proceeding to overturn a Los Angeles pet sterilization ordinance.
