Looking for some experienced opinions. I have an 8 month old pup that hasn't hunted with any other dogs yet. He's done everything on his own so far. i was running him last night when he struck and ran the track about 200 yards and treed. This is the fourth coon he's treed to date. It took me about 15 minutes to get to him (very steep terrain). He was treed on a tall oak with lots of leaves. I praised him up, tied him to the tree and started to look for the coon. I was not able to find a coon in that tree, but I did find a small coon in a tree about 40 feet away in a maple with no leaves. Without thinking about it, I led my dog to that tree and he did start treeing on it without any encouragement from me. I tied him back, let him tree another 15 minutes, then shot the coon and let him have it. Thinking about it, there very well could have been a coon in the leafy oak. Should I have handled this differently? Should i have just praised him up on the oak tree and led him off to hunt another track? The last thing I would want to do is confuse the dog or teach him any bad habits........looking for feedback. Thanks

The next time this happens just pretend you didn't see the other coon. Never roll one out he didn't tree and keep on hunting him alone for best results. Another dog will not teach him one single thing at this point. Good luck sounds like you have a dang good one on your hands.

Thanks for the help. I kind of figured on the way out of the woods that I had made a bad decision. I just wasn't sure exactly what would have been the best way to handle it. Your advice makes perfect sense.

Well that coon very well coulda taped the tree or been there all along, I'd say your dog was off by just alittle. Don't worry one wrong move on your part won't hurt much. If you kept doing that yea,, that would be bad

If you saw a small coon there very well could have been a litter and you just didnt see the one in the first tree. My buddy treed a sow and 3 little ones saturday night here in Pa. And I've seen my dog tree in plain sight of other dogs half a dozen times in the last year and both trees had coon.

Yeah. I really believe there was a coon in the big oak tree. I know the dogs senses are better than mine.....I can't be telling him which tree to tree on. Next time we'll just move on to the next track. Do you guys praise up a young dog when he trees hard, even if you can't see the coon?

I never praise up a pup if i don't see the coon. Better to have the coon and not be praised than to be praised when he doesn't have it. In fact, missing out on some praises (when he has the meat) won't hurt your dog.

Luckily the laeves will soon be off and you'll be able to tell better if the grease is there. I hunt a Plott and she is fast on the track but slow to tree, she checks hard for an exit trail. She'll check and locate at least 4 times before she settles in. When she trees your going to see a coon. So with her, even when the leaves are thick and I cant find athe coon I still give her praise because slick treeing doesn't seem to be a problem with her. I've witnessed her coming into a slick tree with other dogs treeing and she'll check it and leave.
