My 5 month old pup did the same thing for about the first 3 or 4 drags. Take a rope and hook it up to her collar and keep pulling her back to the tree. Whining is a good sign because they smell it up in there they just dont know what you want them to do. If she lets out just even one bark tell her good girl and pet her up. Don't give her any affection until she barks. I had to wait on the tree for about 20-30 mins at first. It seems like a long time, but now she's barking everytime. It will probably take her a while to figure it out. Please let me know how it works for you.

Ham,

Just give him time. Hunt him with other dogs that get the job done. Don't use the drag too often. Turn some coons lose on him. Have another dog that will help him out if he can't. Pour a bucket of water on the coon before you turn him lose. You might even turn one lose and let him see it go up a tree!

ABOUT SHOOTING THE COON OUT...

I disagree with the shooting them out dead. A young pup fighting a few coons is what turns them on many times. I have a 6 month old pup that has been fighting coons shot out for over a month! That is with other dogs (not by himself)! If he don't like it he'll back up.

I'm training another guy's pup and she will just sit back and bay the coon.

I personally don't like to take my pups out into the woods until they can tree on a drag by THEMSELVES. Otherwise they are just running through the woods and they dont know what they're looking for. Just give it time and dont give up. Yeah letting some coons go to him probably wouldnt be a bad idea. I dont recommend shooting coons out to ur pup unless ur pup trees the coon.

thanks im just trying to get him to use his nose. i think he will make a nice dog.
he has a unique nose, parts of it a solid white. i have never seen this with a walker or any other hound for that matter. has anyone ever seen a dog with part of its nose white?

i got my pup to bark at the drag last night. he ran the track and treed. i didnt approch the tree and he came and got me. i tied him back and put the drag just out of his reach and he started barking. then i pulled the drag back up the tree and let him go . he sat at the bottom of the tree and barked a few times .
what is next? send him with and older dog hunting, or do i need to show a live coon first?
i hope to get that picture soon.

The best thing you can do is start hunting the dog with coon dogs. Hunting is what makes a dog.

I would hunt him by himself personally. That way he isnt relying on other dogs.

he chop barked 25 times in 30 seconds last night on the drag. he sure loves coon. hope to have the picture of him today.
now since i have 2 opinions on what to do next, from 2 people that seems to have a backgroud with hounds , WHAT DO I DO??
i have been told both of these by locals as well. the only thing different ive herd is to show him live coon.
i sure dont wont to mess this little man up.
thanks for helping out a rookie

He's a great looking dog sounds like he's doing good for you. Honestly the safest route to go is to run him by himself so he doesnt pick up any bad habits.
