I have a 9 month old female. I have owned her for about 2 months and we go to the woods every weekend for about 4 hours or so. 2 weeks ago I took her out with an older dog but she didnt run with them, she stayed close to me the whole time. the older dog treed 2 coons and she was with me at the tree and just kind of wondered around, I think confused at why that other dog was barking at a tree......sence then I only take her out at night, she will chase anything by sight i.e deer or rabbit.....I showed her a caged coon a couple weeks ago and she didnt think of it in the cage, when I cut it loose she chased it until she couldnt see it anymore then just wondered off......
I do understand she needs to learn to use her nose but she shows no interest in scent drags or hides as a play toy......is there any other tricks I can use to get her to understand to chase by smell and not sight?
I had one person tell me to get another caged coon, cut her and the coon lose at the same time. She will most likely catch the coon, they will fight alittle and then the coon will tree....all in effort to get her hating coons...I think thats a ok idea but its still all done by sight. What I want is to get her using her nose. any help would be great!

I wouldn't want a 9 month old dog to be fighting a coon. If she gets hurt that might be her biggest memory of coon and she may want nothing to do with them in the future. Also, fighting "a little" is a big assumption. Once they're going at it you've lost control and there's no way of knowing how far or long the fight will go. My dog caught a coon on the ground and had his first real fight last week. That coon ran past plenty of trees while my dog was chasing it; led my dog into the water where it almost drowned my dog. Coon was 1/4 the weight of my dog, but he was still kicking butt.

First make sure the dog cant see you. Then he said to take ur scent drag and just wipe it on the tree and put your dog on a 25-30 ft rope with a lead. Next take the dog into it make sure it up wind, so it can catch the scent in the air. He said you'll be able to tell if you have a good dog if when your about 15-20 yards away it can pick up the scent in the air. Take your dog and let it find the scent if it's stugglings guide it back in the direction of the tree. Do this until the dog barks on the tree. He said he wont even take a dog into the woods until it has barked on the drag because it proves they are ready. He said you can start them as young as 5 weeks if u want. My pup is 5 months that im working with/
