Ok, now I have something to go on, thanks. NO coon and cats do not smell alike. You have to break the dog off of cats if you don't want it on cats. I might let you in on a bit of a secret though. A natural cat dog is worth VERY big money to a lot of people.

Like you would any trash, pull him off the tree without any attention. And get back to hunting coon. This is where training material comes in. Such as, training whips (LCK has more info on that), E-collars, phsyical demands, ETC. Treat the cat as a possum. And there are tons of threads on breaking a dog of possum. Try out the search button.

Ive got a 10 month old blue-tick. runs and trees our house cats like crazy. But also when I'm lucky enough to catch a live coon. He'll hunt it just as hard. Is it too soon to break him off of cats this early since he is hunting and treeing? Id hate to ruin him by making him think i don't want him hunting. He's never hunted with other dogs.

Pen him up or chain him so he can't tree them. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it starts happening when you go hunting. He's real young and the cats are available. If you can't stand it make sure he doesn't have and opportunity to tree those cats. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it unless he starts treeing cats when you're hunting real coons.

There are a lot of young pups that start out treeing cats or squirrels. However, with my dogs, by the time they're 5 or 6 months old I'm letting them know that's not okay. While I'm still a few months away from starting to think about doing anything concerning coons, I'm taking every opportunity at this age to let them know through our walks and play time what's NOT okay to chase.
