How hard is it to train a hound for multi-purpose hunting? I want to use my bluetick for coon in the fall, coyote when the snow flies, and also some bobcat hunting. Is this something that's tough to do? I don't imagine a young dog will pick this all up in 1 season, or will it? I know they're not going to learn everything in one season, but can a decent dog learn to hunt more than 1 thing well, or would it take a truly"great" dog to handle all this. Black bear and wild boar wouldn't be out of the question either.

we have some real great multi purpose hounds around here. many people dont have the money or time to have lots of hounds fer every game..lotta guys run bear yote and cat..and coon witht he same dogs. i have my coondogs..and then i got big game dogs. my "all pupose hounds " run yotes and bear..i dont run cats er they would prolly do that to. sounds like you have a plan to me. just dont get mad if your dog chooses a bear track over a coon er vise versa..he dont know any better. good luck

You might want to consider a cur dog for being more multi-purpose. It's not unusual to use a Blackmouth Cur to run squirrel in the morning, coon at night, and catch a hog in between. Shucks, I use mine to push rabbit out of the clumps, then go on and squirrel hunt. I think they just tend to listen better and figure out what you want them to do.

Post subject:  Coon and bear running

I have my pup started on coon but she isn't 100% yet and has never been on a live coon yet, but my question is if I ran her on bear also could this ruin her on coon?
