I have a 6 month old red dog I’ve been walking in the woods. He hasn't seen a coon yet. This dog shows very little interest in squirrels. sniffs around and sometimes rears on trees and looks up but you can tell he's not excited, even though i know some of the trails are red hot because i saw the squirrels on the ground. Same way with a feral cat. He shows some curiosity and will run a cat out of site but doesn't really pursue or bark. I know he can track because I've seen him do it on a squirrel drag and he'll find it every time. What does his marginal interest in squirrels and cats mean? Is he going to be super straight or just not very gamey?

are you training him to be a squirrell dog?
the best way to keep them straight on coon is to only expose them to coon.
the fastest way to make them trashy is to hunt them with something that is trashy.
second fastest is a pup that has not been exposed to coon enough that it's mindset is on coon left to dink around and find some trash to get after on its own because it don't know WHAT it is suppose to hunt.
you don't teach them how to run and tree, you teach them WHAT to run and tree.

Toe cutter, thanks. I did the squirrel drag twice when he was 3.5 months because thinking of letting him start on squirrels but changed my mind because i'd prefer a straight cooner. Guess I did no harm (luckily) 'cause he doesn't show interest in them in the woods. Had one dog in my life would show absolutely no interest in anything but coon. My pup will see first coon in about one month. Was wondering if lack of interest in off game, including deer, would mean he's going to be naturally straight. I hope so.

your pups ON button is in the OFF position right now. you have to turn his switch on,
its up to you to turn it on with coon and to keep him straight on coon.
i don't believe any dog is born naturally straight on coon because of one simple fact -
they are born a coonhound breed, but they have no idea of what a raccoon is either.
so even though he shows no interest in off game don't mean he won't learn to if you let him, just like if he has no interest in coon now don't mean he won't make a coondawg.
