what's a good way to break a dog off deer, besides a shock collar, i don't think they're quite necessary? And is it true a late started dog usually turns out better than a dog that starts at about 8 months?

You can do it without an e-collar but I sure don't understand why you would want to? :?

well, i don't have a shock collar, and i just know they is other ways, but i don't know if they work or not, somebody told me to put a deer leg in a barrel, with my dog, and roll it down a hill, think that would work?

The long lead will sure help, but can easily train the dog not to pay attention to deer scent when near you. I know it is sometimes difficult to afford an e-collar, but they are in my opinion the most important piece of dog equipment you can have. The collar clininc and ebay usually have some very decent re furbished or used systems at reasonable prices. The thing with trash breaking is that you really need to catch them in the instant before they commit or the very second they have committed to be the most effective. If the dog is on lead you have to get the dog to be at your side for the correction and you run an extremely high risk of correcting the dog for being next to or for coming to you. Science has proven that we have less than one second to either reinforce or correct a dogs behavior. Anything longer than that can very easily transfer to a completely different behavior. Just too much risk for me to chance it. Please don't put your dog in a barrel with a deer leg. That is nothing more than cruelty. I do not care how many old timers swear by it. It is not effective. It does not work. It is complete hogwash. It is nothing more than absolute cruelty. It is nothing more than a desperate act done by desperately stupid people. I am not sorry if this last statement offends anyone. If you do that with a dog you deserve to be offended.

I never have. I have never jumped off a cliff to see if it really hurts either.

well, if you ask me, it makes since why it would work, you're associating deer scent, with some freaky ##*%*, but it also makes since why it wouldn't work, because it's rediculous. I was just saying, it kinda makes since, maybe i should do it with somebody else's worthless mutt or something.

Try the long lead first. I think it would work much better. Good luck.

make yourself a muzzle and cuts some scent glands off a road kill deer. put the glands in the muzzle and make your dog wear it for a week or so.take it off only for your dog to eat or drink it works for some dogs it may work for yours.

I HAVE seen it done once, and watched the owner pull his dead dog out of the barrel at the bottom of the hill.I know of 2 other people that tried it,one's dog didn't die, but was crippled from a broken back. The other had no obvious injuries, but associated the barrel with one thing- the jackass that stuffed him INTO the barrel and caused the dog to be so screwed up he could never again get his hands on him. There is no such thing as a quick or easy way of training a coon dog.The next time someone tells you about an "easy" or "quick" fix, ask them if they would do it to THEIR dog.As far as trying it out on a "worthless mutt",I don't know of any dog that ASKED to be born, and certainly doesn't deserve to be tortured because of your opinion of him.Saying stuff like that on an open forum certainly helps give all coonhunters a bad name.Take him to the pound- that "worthless mutt"may be the best Christmas present some little girl ever got.
