Would it be a good or bad idea to start hunting and training my 8 month old pup in the middle of summer?

kitten's are down and wont run far. If he'll go hunting, then go huntin. You either have a good one or you dont.

If the dog has been conditioned to run in this oppressive heat it might be ok to start em now but I'd wait untill fall and cooler weather.

I think on the cool nights it would be fine to go but the pup and the plder dogs need to be conditioned. I am going to start takin my to pups in just a few weeks because i only got to take them about three times last year. So it should be ok.

hard hunters allways have the best hounds on the end of their leash.........period.

I hunt just as much in the summer as winter. Its just later than in the winter time. When it cools off..(If its too hot for me) its way too hot for the dogs...LOL...I hunt young dogs just enough to get them started until they get older....I also take water for the dogs.. But most of the time they wont drink...Until they are done hunting for the night..They could be getting water from the small creeks and river bottoms I hunt............

Get him in the woods if you think he is ready for it. I hunt as hard in the spring and summer as the kill season. Just don't have to carry a gun or skin and carry 'em out. The bugs and brush can be challenging though.

Good Luck

it just depends on how mature u think the dog is, if it still wants to play alot then wait and train the dog on obedience. i would take the dpg to the woods and let it run around with you but dont push it away to go in the woods this is just to get it used to the woods and it helps get the pup out of it bt dont try to make it mature to quik tho, that will ruin a dog and make sure to let ur dog lay up in its kennel for a while aftr u work it some

I always start them as early as possible. This does not mean a 3 month pup needs to be tracking and treeing on it's own. Make play a part of training early.

Take the dog to the woods and as it matures train more. Some dogs start earlier than others. Be patient and let the dog tell you when it's ready. If possible I try to at least let a pup see a caged coon by 6 months. It's reaction to the cage will tell you a lot.

Most of all have fun!

Post subject:  Summer time pup starting?

I was wanting to know if anyone around the south has started a pup this time of year. I have one that will be a year old in august and I believe is is ready to start. I don't want to get him too hot and make him not want to hunt and tree coons. Any advice is appreciated.

I think since they were out with an older dog they seem to know what to do. i would try it. it might not workout for the first couple nights but there pups. so every once in a while it wouldnt hurt to take an older dog out with them. but as soon as the 2 girls get it done right the way you want it, i would definately shoot out a coon for them and let them fight it a bit. then it would be a good idea i think to split them up just as much as you hunt them together though. got a buddy who has this happened you dont want them to think say one does really good on track and one trees before the other one they get it done really quick and if you split them up they are not doing as good. so i would start hunting and gradually hunt a lot harder. they will come around. i would split them up with a older dog and work them both separately just until they do good enough then they can go on ther own for awhile. hope this helps if it makes any sense
