for when doing drags to you go out and shoot a coon and skin it or use the whole coon. and how do you perserve the hide or do you just toss it at the end of the day and go shoot another one the next time to train? |

I often use road kill. After skinning but it in a plastic bag and in the deep freeze so you can use it later. |

well i have coon hides in the frezzer from last fall that i trapped i guess i could skin those and test the pups. plus they take up a lot of room. |

Frozen road kill or frozen hides seem to work just fine for me. |

personally I have had no luck with drags. Best thing I have found is lots of walks in woods and let pup start chasing squirrels. Cant take a pup to the woods that has been kenneled all his life and expect much. Alot of basic training can be done when pup is to young to hunt, like crossing fences and creeks, and such. Best to let dog run loose some if possible around house. Then When the pup is around six months old I introduce him to a live coon in live trap. Some pups are ready this young some arent. Tie him and let it loose to see if he,ll chase it. If not wait another month continueing to take to the woods on walks. I have owned pups that would run and tree coons but never bark at caged coon ? until hunted a kill season. Next take the pup with an expeirenced dog to see if it will hunt with older dog. An older dog called "check" dog will tell you alot about what your pup is doing out in the woods. A check dog can help identify what type game your pup is running or if a coon is there and the pup just isn't interested yet. Most good dogs that will make coon dogs will just start runnings and treeing if taken to the woods with out alot of training. Frequent walks or running free to learn basics then hunt them. dogs with really strong instinct and genetics shouldn't need much training just perfecting through experience. Every night ads another notch of knowledge to a dogs experience and ability. Oh Im a firm believer in hunting a dog alone one its started to buyild a confident split treeing dog. |

My pups chase and fight with a drag just fine but they don't bark. Any tips? |

I have my first red bone or coon hound as far as that goes and it is a lot of fun thus far. Not saying it hasn't been frustrating but still a fun learning experience for the both of us. I got him at a couple months old and started him after about a week on leash commands, come, sit, ect.. Still a work in progress but really coming along real nicely. As soon as I could find a coon that wasn't all rotten I cut the tail off and tied it to a stick. Played with the pup around the yard and pulled it up trees. I haven't gotten him to bark on it but he will stay at the tree. After doing that for about two weeks I decided to tie him off and go into the woods with his coon tail. Once I got into the woods I dropped it and dragged the tail. Put it in a brush pile in the woods. I walked him to the tree line and told him "go find your coon". I released him and he was off like a bat out of hell. Located the tail with no problem. I will keep doing this until I catch a live coon and then start using the trapped coon. I think once I use the live coon he will start to voice on it. Am I on the correct path? |

That's what I have been doing with my 4 month old bluetick still waiting on a live coon and have even drove down the road and let him out on a coon that crossed the road not sure if I'm doing this right this is my first coon dog to train and he as hit every coon but will not bark for nothing on a drag or a hot trail or a coon in a tree so if I'm doing wrong let me know as we'll please Sent from my iPhone using Ohub Campfire |

If that coon isn't intimidated by the pup it will either kill it or hurt it bad enough to not want to hunt. That's just what I have gathers from other hound hunters and books I've read.
