Post subject:  coon trouble

So far I have caught 5-6 coons and the last two I have caught have gotten away. The first chewed threw its cage and the second got away when I was trying to put a collar on him. He is still runnin around with two 22. bullets in him. Can any of you help me in telling me how to get a collar on one. I will see about getting another one soon.

GET A HOG CATCHER. ATLEAST THATS WHAT WE CALL THEM. YOU CAN BUY THEM THE CO-OP. IT'S A PIPE WITH A WIRE LOOP THRU IT AND A STEEL HANDLE THAT LOCKS WHEN YOU PUL THE CABLE TIGHT AROUND THEIR NECK. OUNCE YOU HAVE IT AROUND HIS NECK HE A CAUGHT SON OF A GUN. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT THEN

Can't say that I ever heard of one of them.We just hold it down by the back of the head and another one of us put a leash on it.

Nothin wrong with using a collar on a coon and leading them around to lay a track, but I have never done it. It really is no different than laying a drag. You always wonder if the dogs are following the coon or you. I have always just wet em down a little and turned em loose. Giving them a little more of a head start each time.

Ok Im relatively new to this so dont make fun of me for asking this because Im sure its a stupid question  but why would you want to even risk touching a coon to put a collar on it?! lol What do you do with it once its leashed...

Dixiebelle I don't do this personally but the coon wont try to bite once it is on a leash it is mainly to leave a trail like dragging a dead coon.lol

i dont mean to argue or nothgin but if draggin a fresh dead coon.. is the same thing as pulling on the leash how come most of my hounds will bark with the one on the leash but not the dead one....???

are we sure a coon won't bite you when it's on a leash? I wouldn't even try it. I think he can climb right up your leg and get ya if he is on a leash.

Im with you parkerhill. leashing him I dont think would have anything to do with him biting you. But them again I have never put a collar on one. So when someone reaches down to see please post and let us know.lol. All the ones I have traped I think would bite you at any time.

Once you get it on the leash you could sorta use this feature put a little piece of pvc pipe or something around the leash and just have the handle hanging out of the top. And getting the collar on...some of the old timers have told me to get some of welder gloves and put it on, personally ive never done it but ive been thinking about it.

i've never heard of anybody doing that, i personally dont think that its all that smart cause a caged coon is pissed of from the git go because its in a cage, i've tried to feed caged coons before and they're so mad they throw the food back at ya, just because they are on a leash dont make them a pet. they'll run right at ya first thing...be careful...if i were you i'd get me a rollcage and let it run by itself then let my dog chase it or just let it go
