I was just wondering how would you go about training a dog to track injured game? Like deer, bear, or hog.

What I did ..A guy gave me a beagle that was bad about running deer. When we shot a deer I just started taking him on every blood trail .Even if I seen the deer fall down dead...My dog does not need blood to track..but we look along the trail to see if theres blood...You would be suprized how far.He trails between blood drops. And where deer go.They go where you cant crawl through on your hands and knees....But if he starts opening on trail you can forget about it..The deer will live...Thats after waiting 5-6 hours before trying to track the deer.........I use about a 25 ft rope on the dog..I let him go through the thick stuff and I or someone else. Gets him when he comes out on the other side...LOL.....Wounded animals have a little Different scent than none wounded ones.............Ive tracked wounded deer up to 2 miles from where they were shot.......but thats rare ..Most dead deer are found within 100-400 yards.............

All of the versatile bird dog clubs, GWP, GSP, Weinaraner, Pudelpointer, Griffon, ect. train for tracking and conduct trials for tracking. Contact any of them for help. There are several books available from the bird dog supply houses on training trackers.
