I know it's more common to make dens this time of year. I have a hound that is almost 14 months old. He turned on a little while back at about 9-10 months old and would trail well, tree pretty hard, and it only took a time or two to teach him to circle slicks and pick up the trail. However the last 8-10 times out (I haven't been keeping a record, about three weeks of hunting) he has stuck nothing but dens, with the exception of one coon caught on the ground and one opossum (that was really my fault, and I feel bad about it). After the one caught on the ground Im mixed up. I feel like he's following good trails, but it's hard to believe every single trail in all of my spots ends with a coon in a den. Anyone have any insight on this? Normal for a young hound? Or maybe he's backtracking?

I wouldn't get to worried about it honestly as young as he is. I have a walker that is 18 months old he started treeing at 7 months and has been off and on ever since some nights he is knock out 100% hound, kill 4 to 6 coons a night with just him. other nights he looks like crap, slicks, dens and just doesn't look like he knows what he is doing at all. I think its just young dogs go thru phases till they get it figured out. also full moons, cold and late season breeding make big boars harder to track and they are big smart coon that want to make it back to a den tree. I recently had an encounter where a big boar circled back when my dogs were on him and he started racing back to a den tree I was standing by it sounded like a deer race x10 they were right on his tail but he made it back to the den safely.
