So I got a redbone/beagle/jack russell cross to be my first coondog (well all around hunting do really). His Sire was a purebreed approx. 80lb redbone which was used to hunt coyotes and was known to tree coons and bear. His dam was a 30lb beagle / jack cross which was used to hunt rabbits and squirrels. The breeding was an opps but a pup was offered to me and after loosing my hunting basset I figured it be a good mix. Now the dog is approx. 7 months old and is probably right around 30lbs (I havn't weighted him in a while). The pup is showing great drive and is following short drags with a coon hide and also a rabbit drag. He's not barking on tree yet, but does get up on the tree.

My questions is, is this dog too small to hunt coons?

not too small in my opinion. theres lots of really good and small hounds out there so it shouldnt make any real difference in your case either. but thats just me.

good luck with it! :D

a little dog can tree coon just like the big dogs. all he has to do is tree them, he aint gotta kill em. that's what a 22 rifle is for.

My full grown pure bred Plott females are only about 45 pounds. They have tons of fight when it comes to coon. They'd probably fight a bear but there coondogs. Just this past Spring my 13 year old Jack Russel died but at 12 pounds I watched her fight a lot of coons.
I'd say you will have no problems if you want to hunt coon with that dog & good luck!!!

2 years ago my mountain cur named buddy passed away. When he was 4 yrs old he attacked and ran off a full grown black bear that came into our yard. He may have went 30 lbs.

Heck no he ain't too small. I've seen people around here use jack Russell dogs on wild hogs. They have great grit. It can get em hurt but good grit!!!
