I would disagree, there are different kinds of intelligents when it comes to dogs. I have noticed some lines of hounds can be taught many things, and many different commands, while other hands not so much. Take the blood hound for example they tend to struggle in basic obedience but when it comes to using there nose and learning to track they are very quick learners. Coonhounds need to be breed for there instinct and tracking abilities first and foremost, the rest is just icing on the cake. If you like a hound that has a good handle and responds well to obedience training, do your research and find out what line of hounds have that bred into them.

I agree some dogs are smarter than others. when we scold some for running off game some quickly learn some don't some it takes a lot of patience. and alot of whoopins. what I am saying is how much time are you putting in with your dog. the more you try to teach him the more you hunt him the more he will learn getting the dogs thinking side of the brain working. I believe helps alot for example dog trees slick lead him off tree find track turn loose if he is a coon dog with patience he will figure out what your asking him and he will start ckecking the trees better before he trees. again just my 2cents worth.{ perseverance is what pays off }
