My coon dog seems to not want to fetch. I have successfully have taught him to sit and shake. I will even spray some coon scent on the ball. Pa always told me if you can teach a dog how to fetch you can teach him how to tree. When picking him out as a puppy I looked for the one chasing his brother and sisters tails because that seemed like that would be the one to fetch. Is it my form when throwing the ball? Should I use a little more wrist or maybe making a coon sound when throwing it? Should I maybe throw a ball at a coon in a tree to show him that the ball is a sign of getting the coon. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks |

Coonhounds are not retrievers and "treeing" isn't a taught activity. They don't tree on command like a retriever fetches on command. Treeing and fetching have nothing to do with each other. Sent from my C5155 using Ohub Campfire mobile app |

I've never heard of it either but everybody has their own beliefs & its not 2 me 2 say any of them are wrong and when I read it it kinda made me think bout my house dog a Boston terrier. He came from the factory fetching & bringing back anything u would throw 4 him. I was setting at the lake camped out last summer & he treed me 2 youngens. I would soak that ball in coon "scent" and most definitely throw over handed. Hissing growling and pulling their tail seems to get them fired up to fetch/attack. Might bounce it hard to and see if you can get it to stick in a fork of tree. That should help with treeing. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Ohub Campfire mobile app |

Is this a joke? If not, as long as the dog chases something when you throw. This is instinctive form of a predator chasing prey. Hence why one is confronted with a dog you never run away. |

I start by playing tug-o-war with a towel then throw it the ball is later after he brings the towel back for more tug-o-war good. My redbone will play fetch great and yes he trees coons good. |

Hm, now I know why my pups wont tree, they chase down stuff but wont bring it back. Them old timers had all kinds of wisdom to share but teaching a hound to fetch will make it tree is definitely a new one for me. |

I think it all boils down to the more time spent with your dog the better your dog will act for you and thinking outside the box is hard for alot of people to do. |

It's not so much the fetching you are looking for. If the dog will chase the ball he has a prey drive. I helped train police k9 for bite work and also drug and explosives dogs. For all of them one of the first tests is to bounce a tennis ball and see if they are interested. If they are they usually have a strong enough prey drive to be trained for search work and if they have the mental fortitude bite work. |

you can never teach a dog to much no matter what kind it is. I believe all in all that you spend as much time as possible with your dog he is suppose to be your best friend as soon as he figures out what pleases you this is what he will set his heart to do. |
