Wondering does leaves falling and dry weather make it harder for dogs to track and have coon or just excuse for sub average dogs?

Dry weather certainly makes a difference. But Leaves? Got to question that one. Not saying a hound can't track in dry weather, but good moist earth certainly helps.

I don't have grand night champs by any means but I have noticed that my dogs have a harder time in dry weather. I have also heard and I do this myself but when workin a pup on a cage coon if you pour water slowly over them just befor you work a pup it helps with makin the scent stinger. I don't know that it actually helps or not but that's what I was taught when I started huntin and training pups.

Always wet caged coon or a drag hide training. I freeze a few hides at the last of season if I'm going to be working pups. Put in airtight zip-lock. When I take them out of freezer I let them thaw then wet them before drag. Can use same hide a few times before the puppies scent gets too strong. Don't have to flesh a hide, but it helps. Wetting just makes scent stronger for the puppy.

I think it is harder on dogs running a track in the dry times but some dogs will always beable to run on dry ground better than others.
