I KNOW IT'S AN ODD QUESTION=BUT=HOW MANY OF THE HOUNDS THAT SLICK TREE WERE TRAINED ALONE INSTEAD OF WITH AN EXPERIENCED HOUND???? TO ME==I THINK A WELL BRED PUP WILL TREE==BUT==IT TAKES AN OLDER DOG TO TEACH IT HOW.

I REALLY DON'T BELIEVE SLICK TREEING IS AN INHERITANCE TRAIT BUT INSTEAD CAUSED BY HUMAN IGNORANCE IN BELIEVING DOGS SHOULD BE WORKED ALONE INSTEAD OF WITH AN HONEST TREE DOG

I agree, I think starting a dog with a good honest dog will imprint the right things in them. But to FINISH a young dog they must be hunted alone. I think the slick treeing comes from too many guys giving their dog the benefit of the doubt. I can tell when my dog pulls up on a slick, she doesn't tree as hard. She also wont stay at that tree very long because she does a good job of checking herself. I don't give her the benefit of the doubt unless she is belly up locked down treed. If I know the tree is slick, I pull her off, scold her and send her to find it.

Slick treeing is bred into them..Thats how you get the real QUICK. I call them hair trigger treedogs that slick tree a lot.Ive found that most dogs anymore are only 50-65 % accurate. It also comes from not knowning how to correct it ...Dogs that are hunted alone as much as possible. Are usually not as bad as dogs that are only hunted with other dogs.. Slick treeing is also learned from other dogs...Ive see this so many times. Guys sale there old well broke dog. Because they have a real nice young dog.. Come to find out the young dog cant tree a coon and they slick treed like crazy...

Chet, I guess the reason i feel the way i do about dogs is because of my history with dogs. I was hunting before the ACHA started the competition hunts in 1948 so I'm a witness to the gradual changing of the old style Coon dog to the modern day competition dog.

I realize that people my age, and old style Coon Hounds that didn't false tree are no longer important. I know it's amusing but i train pups like it was done over a hundred years ago; but i don't competition hunt, I just Coon Hunt. what i call a Coon dog, won't win a competition hunt, They are too deliberate

What are the differences in old and new style dogs? New style a lot faster and just have tree bred into them? I've heard that some breeds supposably had their brains bred right outa them

you don't teach how to track or tree. you teach what to track and tree.

I think slick treeing is bred in the dog because they have been bred looking for a lot harder tree dog. I have been to the woods with some tree happy idiots I think some just will not take the time to check them selves a lot of dogs just wont to tree. I think a lot have lost the checking and tracking ability they just get hung up and tree.

Got to agree with Ballinbluetick. There is a vast difference between the old coon hound and the new. Comp hunting has been a detriment to coon hunting in my old humble opinion. Everything has to be fast now. Fast cars, fast food, fast, fast, faster. Not one of my hounds would stand a chance in a comp hunt because they are simply bred and trained like my Dad and Grandpa' did it and now I do it.
