I went last night with my uncle to run the dogs and after a couple hours they finally treed and were at the tree for more than a half hour before I got there to get the dogs.

So I praised the dogs and leashed them up and made my way back to the truck put them in their box and went home for the night.

Is there anything we can do to not ruin the dogs from pulling them off trees in the off season? My uncle has never ran dogs before killing season and is afraid the dogs won't want to hunt if we keep pulling them off trees and they don't get a taste of coon every time out until kill season starts.

You do realize in Comp. Hunts there is no killing of the coon????? You pull them off the tree and turn out again and go tree another. Doesn't effect a dog pulling off tree. Take your Uncle to a comp hunt if he thinks differently. Many dogs are trained in the off seasons with no coon shots out. You don't need to shoot out coons to make a coon dog.

Ok that makes sense thanks. But what about after pulling them off a tree and putting them right in the dog box. Do we need to do that with some kind of treat so they don't think they were bad dogs or just give them a lot of praise just before putting them in? Treats have never been part of their training. This is only the second year my uncle has had these dogs. And the one was only 6 months old when he started trailing and treeing.

I don't think it hurts a good dog at all. I hunt year round and only kill during season. Posted using Outdoor Hub Campfire

My dogs have treed 1000s of coon in the summer time. I have not knocked out a coon in the summer in over 20 yrs..I train my dogs in the Night hunt style. After every dump and they tree they get put in the dog box .Then we go to another dump or go home and switch dogs My younger dogs after they tree a coon and look good doing it are done for the night..Thats while Im training them.. If your dogs are treeminded you don't need to knock coons out to them.....Now if you train them so every time they tree they get the coon.You might run into trouble hunting them in the summertime.. Thats why its best to hunt a dog all year round if you can...The best dogs I ever trained were started in the summertime....Im hunting a dog now that was never hunted in the summer.Shes having trouble treeing kittens.That's because shes never seen one until a few weeks ago. My dogs that have been summer hunted are treeing kittens every might....LOL..
