I think the longer you keep a dog in shape the longer it will live. If you have a dog that won't slow down no mater how tired it is that's up to you to stop it. But most older dogs will let you know when they are done for the night. Posted using Outdoor Hub Campfire |

I don't believe in retiring a dog. The dogs love doing what they do. If they are able to do it, take um. I sure hope if I am able to hunt when I'm getting up there in years someone doesn't stop me from going just cuz I'm old. Posted using Outdoor Hub Campfire |

I have an 8 yr old female I hunt 3-4 nights a week usually around 4-6 hrs each time she doesn't have any problem if I let her sit around the house she gets stiff but when I hunt her up good she gets around good. A coondog in good health should be able to hunt until at least 10. But sitting in the kennel is hard on an. Old dog. Posted using Outdoor Hub Campfire |

My dog lasted out until he was about 9 1/2. Our hunts got shorter and shorter and then he didn't much want to go anymore, self-retired himself to the stove at night. He died when he was 10. |

He died when he was 10. I have two Leopards. I was shocked to look at the papers the other day to see that one is 8 and the other is nine. I couldn't believe it because they get better every year still. Well maybe not better. They just make it look easier and easier. Just looking at them today I fully expect this coming season to be as good as last. I had an old walker that made it to 13. About 12 though he started losing it mentally more than physically. He might slick tree if I was calling him or he saw my headlight on my head or my truck. At 13, it was the night before the Grand American I took him and my tracking collars were dead. He did not come out though he was treed earlier that night. It was not like him to leave a tree. I got new collars the next day but did not get to look for him that night. The next night he was treed when I got there. I started in and he hushed. I finally left some feed and a coat where I parked. I went back for several nights but never heard anymore of him. Have not found his collar either. I think the old boy just wanted to die in the woods. |

I like hunting young dogs when I hunt alone. I usually hunt a young dog with a older broke dog.Or hunt a young done alone. To finish them out..But When I hunt with my buddys I always take my older dogs .Just because I know them and what they will do. I just lost one of my older dogs. Kate died a week or so after I last hunted her . She looked great and I was really surprised she died .Just found her dead in her dog house..Im hunting Jane a 10yr old now with my young dogs and she still has it... |

When you start to see your dog winding down is about the time you wanna slow it down a bit. Don't stop hunting them that's when they will go down hill just don't push him. If the dog hurts to much to even load up I wouldn't even let him go any more retire him and keep him a porch buddy. No sense In making him suffer, he did his job.
