I hunt aboard Camp Lejuene in Eastern North Carolina. It has mixed hardwood and pine forests which has decent coon habitat. I have a young dog that is treeing on most of the tracks she opens on except when I hunt in areas that have recently had controlled burns and still smell like burnt wood. She strikes tracks along either creeks or saltmarshes with water and moves them well in the wet areas until she gets into the burned areas in the forest which are extremely dry and gets stumpted and loses the track and doesn't tree. We found 2 coon last night in a tree 50 yards from where she seemed to be stumped and I caught her and walked her by the tree. It was a fairly large pine and the bark was burned up to around 6 ft off the ground. She gave no indication she could smell a coon on the tree and we went to another spot which had a nice creek and again she struck a decent sounding track, lined it out, trailed into a controlled burn mostly pine forest and lost the track. She is 13 months old and is still learning the ropes. Are dry, burned out areas difficult for most seasoned coon dogs, or does she just need to get more experience?

old dogs having that problem out west,ash turns to dust and messes up a dogs nose,I would not worry about it, few rains will help.

Thanks frog for the info. I was getting frustrated with my dog thinking she is regressing back to acting like a dumb pup.

i dont run those areas when it is dry. just like frog said that ash turns to dust and just clogs a dogs nose. u should wait for a rain that keeps that ash on the ground or washes it away.

They burn where I hunt every year starting March. My best dogs have worked a track across ashes from a 4 day old burn (no rain) but no fun to listen to. Normally they burn progresively across the place and if it doesnt rain they might get it all done in a week. So I got to where had not been burned yet found a good oak flat and turned out. After about 45 minuites the dogs came back, even my old walker. I decided to ride on and turn out again. LOL The next two mile were still moldering. I had turned out in a 5 acre patch that had a cemetary in it that they did not burn. I was glad to find that old walker would come back because before that I didn't think he knew what come back was.
One time the dogs treed right where the fire had burned itself out. The coon was there and the boy with me wanted to climb and shake him. He shook and shook. The coon decided to walkdown. The boy didn't have much choice but let the coon crawl down him so he took his hat when the coon got to him and slapped him about twenty feet. The coon happened to land in the burned area and danged if he didn't get away.
