Post subject:  Dog ill in box
Does anyone know how to break a dog from gettin a little ill in the box. Hes fine on the ground but as soon as you load him up he will turn and growl a little.

its real hard to give any answer without some history on the dog.
i read it as he is growling at you or whoever loads him.
if so,i would guess someone got him doing that by being too rough (abusive) trying to make him load.(shocking him, getting on the tailgate and putting a foot in there and so on). its the only reason a dog would get growly when he loads. kinda like he is used to getting hurt around the loading process and had enough of being abused. if thats the case you will only make it worse by trying to "break" him of it.
IF IT IS for sure the only time and place he shows being ill i would just work around it and he should/may just stop on his own when he relizes you aint gonna put the hurts to him when he loads. if he shows it anywhere else he has a major malfunction in his brain. dont matter if its man made or bred in - you will not break, beat or shock the illness out of a dog no sooner then you will make a shy dog not shy by baby-ing it.but you can make one ill and or shy by mistreating them.

T.C. is right I recently took on a five year old male that was ill on and in the box. Owner was gonna cull him. I got him in my box and brought him home. Took me almost twenty four hours some dog food and bacon grease to coax him out without a confrontation. Took almost two more weeks to get him to not run in his nest and growl when fed. But once he figured out he wasn't in trouble or gonna get juiced every time. He is now a lap puppy my nine year old feeds him and loads him, but is just the right height to receive all the face cleanings (licking) he now loves to give. So with the right handling and TIME they can be turned around if they want to be.

Sorry i have twin boys and would never be ok with them around a dog that is aggressive. I'm not for shock collars either. My grandfather never tolerated an ill dog and neither will I. Just my opinion

JMO.... I have owned bear hounds now since 97. If I figured there was anything at all wrong with the dog other than the previous handler/owner, I would not have taken him. Lack of a cattle prod sure has made a difference. I have also raised five Rottweilers as family pets all of which were the biggest babies anyone has ever seen. I would NEVER jeapordize the safety of my children! Some people always jump the gun and lay blame in the wrong places before they get all the facts.

I'm not saying you deliberately put your child in harms way. But it is a bold statement to say every dog that is ill will turn nice with a little tlc. I have owned pits for years and know the body language of a bad dog. But know enough to say I don't know it all. You made a decision that worked out for you and that's great for you and the dog. I'm just saying there is a better chance that dog doesn't turn around and gets someone hurt. I have seen it too many times with all dogs.

Wasn't trying to start a ?:$$ing match either. I never did nor will I ever claim to know it all, if that happens all the fun would be gone for me as I try to learn from every minute i get to spend with dogs. But read my last sentance of that post, (so with the right handling and TIME they can be turned around if they want to be.) I never said every dog will was simply telling a personal story. I am like you I can read dogs from having rotties and hounds. Its mostly in how they are handled and raised.

i just don't understand why someone always has to go that route on these forums.If i'm not mistaken the creator of this thread asked for opinions on what to do with his dog not opinions on other peoples opinions.Thank you walkemup for your insight guys like myself who are both new to hound training and this forum really appreciate and enjoy reading and learning from your personal experiences thanks again
