I got a 2yr bluetick male that hasn't been hunted much. When he runs with another dog he will work that dog but sometimes barks on track. Few mins later he will tree again n he will stay there till he see u then he will stay around for a bit but stop treeing then he will take off n start trackin again. He acts like he doesn't know wat tree to go to. Any ideas??

mainly the he has'nt been hunted much is alot of it.
one thing i can not stress enough is the other dogs you hunt a pup with. make sure any dog you hunt your know nothing pup with is the real deal coon dog and does not have a bunch of bad habits and faults.
your pup will learn bad habits and faults from another dog much faster then he will learn anything else from it. if you hunt him with another dog you want to hunt him with a dog that consistantly trees coon and does'nt leave trees and run off game and all that. its a long ways and alot of hunting between him opening on track and trying to tree one and looking stupid to him actually running only a coon track ,treeing, having the coon and staying treed. takes alot of boot tracks in the woods to take a know nothing dog to the point of him actually being able to tree a coon the right way.

not red handed as in "knowing for sure" he was on a deer kind of red handed. but catching hold of him while he was actually in the act of chasing it kind of red handed.. i doubt you messed up. its sounds like he is smart enough to know why he got whipped.

Thanks Toe Cutter! I took him out again tonite and he did the same thing. He ran a deer, but this time when I called him back he came straight to me. All I did was put him on the leash, and took him back home. I didn't whip him. I think I need to catch a coon and turn it loose right at dark. Then go get him and turn him out on it. I really want him to trail and tree a coon before letting him run with a seasoned coon dog. What do you think? I have a lot of patients and a lot of faith in him.

So ur sayin teach pups on a drag coon n not work them with an older dog? Or just dump one of them in the woods alone n let him run until he gets it down?

ive heard if you take a deer's scent gland and wrap it in wire and hang it on an eletric fence it breaks them fairly well.

i have a friend that starts his pups with released coon. i start mine with another dog. with both of these methods the pup is exposed to the coon.
either way works to make them want a coon bad enough to try and track and tree one.
the one big differance in my friend and myself is that he will hunt his pup with what ever dog another guy brings to go hunting with him.
you will find that not everyone has the same idea of what a coondog is , much less what coondog a guy should be hunting a pup with. some think deer races, grinners ,slick trees and leaving trees, back tracking is all part of the game of coon hunting. it is not.
because they are hunted with any dog a guy brings my friends pups will tree opossums, run deer and all kinds of bs habits they learn from those other dogs the other guy brings.
myself i wont hunt my pup with any dog but one of mine. i know for sure they won't run deer, won't mess with grinners, won't leave trees and absolutly are not one bit ill at any time towards a pup or young dog.
if you are not gonna use another dog then use released coons to get your dog started. you must do some kind of pre training before you take the dog to the woods alone. if he does not have some idea of the scent of a coon and the want to find coon he is alot more apt to find grinners, deer and what ever else to get after. although he is a coon hound breed he has no idea what a coon is untill you somehow expose him to them.
when my pup will try and track and tree a coon i hunt them strickly alone and i'll hunt them till around 3 yrs old alone or only with my other dogs before i ever put them with just any dog another guy brings..
alot of times when i go with someone else we turn his dog or dogs one drop then turn mine loose the next turn out. so you can hunt your dog alone and still not have to hunt alone yourself. but when training a pup you will find yourself hunting alot all by your lonesome.

yes you need to get his mind on coon before hunting him in the woods at night with or without a seasoned dog. you may be able to get him coon crazy enough to leave the deer alone. but more then likely you will have to do some type of deer breaking too. with a pup like yours you are walking a very thin line on stopping him from chasing deer and NOT stopping him from chasing coon. if he was already running and treeing coon you could use about any method to deer break him. at this point i would consentrate on getting him to run and tree coon and worry about the deer later if you have to. you dont want to knock the fire out of him towards coon by trying to break him off deer right now.
the first couple released coon i let go i would let him see them run off, give it a good head start and then turn him loose. some pups you will have to kinda go with them after it. then i would work towards turning him out to find the track of some he did'nt see run off. then do the night releases where you release one and then go get him out and cast him the direction it went to find the track..

What i got from this is that, you dog like many are started , but need more hunting. When he hunts alone try to find out what kinda track he's on. Usually a started pup will open on hot tracks, but to smell out a lay up coon is a different story. Some dogs won't open on lay up coons because they are uncertain. Furthermore this might be the reason hes moving from treed trees. Uncertainty... Keep hunting him and try to think like the dog, find out what hes doing.

I have a nine month old male Bluetick that was doing pretty good. I've never hunted him with another dog. He's treed a half a dozen coon. He goes out plenty far enough for me. Lately (last two weeks) he's running everything BUT coon. When he started chasing deer, I got right after him with the e collar. He's by no means completely broke off deer, but whatever he ran tonight didn't act like a whitetail to me. I started tonight by finding a deer, leading my dog to where it was, and then I nicked him with the e collar to reinforce some previous training. My dog showed zero interest in running that deer. I then took Him down the road a ways and turned him out along a creek. Within 1 minute he struck a track and ran it in a straight line for a little over a mile before I got around in front of him with the truck. All this took a total of 15 minutes. I could tell the way he ran and barked that he wasn't chasing a coon. I always heard deer would run big circles. Have you all had them run straight away like this? How can I tell what he's chasing?

It could also be a bear, twice last year mine ran a bear but didn't get it treed. There was snow on the ground and I found the tracks when she blew out if the area and both times it was a pretty straight line but straight up the mountain. The second time she went about 2 miles in the first 10 minutes and I ended up cutting her off on a road about 4 miles away.
