I always work my dogs single until they can do it 100 percent on their own. And a lot of times I only hunt one dog at a time cause it's a little easier to handle by myself.

You're better off getting sound advice from experienced hunters on how to train and hunt 1 dog. The easiest thing in the world for a young dog to learn is bad habits from other dogs. You want the dog to be well established in how YOU like to hunt before mixing it up with other dogs.

Starting your dog alone is a good thing. I wouldn't give him too many coon on the ground before hunting him with other dogs...he won't want to share. In fact, as soon as he's demonstrated ability to track and tree, i'd get him some company at least part of the time. Needs to learn to share the tree and dead coons and to deal with dogs that don't want to share. But keep only in the company of good hounds 'til he really gets going good. Above all, read the Wick book.

it takes ALOT of patience to train one solo, but believe me the rewards are greater, and you will form a certain bond with the dog.

Here s some tips for you...

Dont get in a habit of walking the dog through the woods. Just turn him loose and let him hunt...takes some time but they will eventually figure it out. I reccommend putting a few feeders out and turning him out close to them and let him find them.

How can you expect the dog to tree a coon if he don t know what one is? Trap a few for him and if he trees em give em to him. Make sure its dark.

Praise when he s right, None when he s wrong.

Oh and one more thing bud, HAVE FUN!!!

another dog does not teach a dog to track or tree, it only exposes the pup to coon so its natural bred in instincts to run and tree kick in once they want a coon bad enough.
you can expose a pup to coon without another dog and acomplish the same thing.
read everything you can get your eyes on with anything to do with training a coonhound. the more you learn the more you can teach.

you can hunt with one dog but you needa get that one dog and concentrate on him and him only until he is able to go find a coon on his own and then hunt him with other dogs

To get him started, live trap some coon..First let him sight chase and when he trees the coon really praise him..After doing this a few times let him see the coon before chase and then release the coon without him seeing where the coon went..Walk him to the track and let him go. If he trees the coon, again praise him and after treeing a few this way give him one..Than he is ready to hunt coons at night by himself..Doesn't hurt to run with a broke hound on ocasion but once he's running and treeing, hunt him alone..Keep him away from trash hunters..Good luck

Good stuff here but i'd seriously limit the caged coon to 2 maybe 3 at the most. I don't want my dog thinking that is how the game is played.
