Just a tip for the newcomers. This time of year is great for young dogs to get used to finding fresh hot tracks, do the dogs a favor and head to creeks, rivers or irrigation ditches., also a prime food that is available now is the mullberry trees, find these and you'll find coon. Good luck and I hope this helps someone.

One more quick tip..East winds with raising barometer make for tough scent conditions

To ghosthunter...Got no facts on it but just an observation over the years. Best scent conditions that I have noticed is when ground and air temps sre close to same with a steady or falling barometer.

Hi
In my years I rate- No. 1 a real coondog- No. 2 a dog that can tree a coon.

A real coon dog doesn't need help from any source. when turned loose It trees a coon and the coon is up the tree!!!!

A dog that can tree a coon does perfect under ideal conditions but their ability varies with the variance of conditions. Some nights they can't tree a coon, some they can't trail good, some they grab bad trees and some nights--- ETC & ETC !!!

The bottom line--- The second type dog always needs help from nature and nature controls their abilities. I expect lots of people to disagree but if they do; to me it will show they have never hunted with a real coon dog. I'm sure most older people have owned real coon dogs and maybe a few younger ones; but they are rare!!!

Plotts

(This time of year is great for YOUNG DOGS to get used to finding fresh hot tracks,) you need a food source to start pups. My only problem is my old corn bucket method is getting costly with these stinkin hogs pullin a hit and run on me,guess i gona have to build a platform to put em on.

For the record I was giving advise on helping a young dog out so that pup learns to hunt and trail on his own without the help of an older dog so he does not become a me to dog.

my old man lol (54 yr old) has had 1 real coondog, he said it didnt matter where you hunted or what he would tree a coon somewhere, but the dog im hunting now is 11 and he ran this dog with old heat when he was young to train. he said heat (the real coondog) would start to work a track where blaze couldnt smell it, heat would warm it up for blaze. blaze more times than not would beat heat to the tree, while heat would still be on the trail.
