cause theres coon in them hallow trees.....especially this time a year.....its just huntin...so either climb the tree and check the hole or pet the dog up and move on....happens to everyone
ITS JUST MY OPINON:: I THINK IT TAKES A TIGHTER MOUTHED DOG TO PUT THEM ON THE OUTSIDE THIS TIME OF YEAR. A DOG THAT OPENS ALOT ON TRACK GIVES THE COON TOO MUCH NOTICE HE IS ON THE WAY. COONS HAVE A NAC TO FIND THE ONLY TREE WITH LEAVES OR A HOLLOW TREE THIS TIME OF YR.AND IF A DOG CANT AMBUSH THEM OR FORCE IT TO CLIMB,BY MAKIN IT A CLIMB OR GET CAUGHT DEAL,IT GIVES THE COON TIME TO GET HOME. THESE SAME WIDE OPEN DOGS TREE COON JUST FINE IN SPRING,SUMMER AND FALL WHEN THE COON KNOW THEY CAN HIDE IN ANY TREE AND WILL CLIMB SOONER. THE YOUNG EASY COON ARE OUT AND THEY CLIMB FASTER TOO. BY LATE WINTER ALL THE EASY COON ARE LONG GONE AND THE ONES LEFT ARE MORE DOG WISE. IF A DOG IS A SLOWER STYLE TRACK DOG AND OPEN ON TRACK THEY WILL TREE ON MORE DEN TREES THIS TIME OF YEAR. BECAUSE OF GROUND TEMPS AND CONDITIONS, ALOT OF DOGS CANT PICK THIER HEAD UP AND PUT AS MUCH PRESSURE ON A RUNNING COON LIKE THEY CAN THE REST OF THE YEAR EITHER.

those hollows have alot of scent around em cuz thats where they live ..take em sumwhere with smaller trees and like toe cutter said if ur dog has a sloppy mouth those coons can hear him for a while and they will be able to just stroll over to those big ol den trees .....if ur dog is tighter it will give that element of suprize ...... and they will run up any old tree
walked to a den one night with a big crack up the side. it looked like a christmas tree with lights. must of been 10 or more coon peepin out the crack. lots of people dont go this time of yr because of just walkin to den trees all night. unless thier in rut. coon stay pretty close to home in the january febuary months. its not your dog,its the coon.
Found the hollow tree to beat all hollow trees tonight, it was an old oak tree probably about 6-8 feet across and was completely hollow and one side was busted out so you could stand in it and look up it. Just hate not bein able to tell for sure if the coon is in em or not though, this tree had so many gnarly limbs it was hard to see everything. Oh well that's the luck of the draw. It was a fun night so I have no complaints.

hey tc or anybody, when coons are rutting, do the males just travel looking females breeding them? thats the way I understood it, that they just go and go breed and breed. thanks for answering

they go den to den searching for females. when they find one close to being ready they will hang out and breed her, maybe a couple times, unless another male comes along and has enough sand to run him off. a dominant male will breed as many as he can. same as a buck deer.
