Post subject:  Post Your Garmin Astro Range and Terrain

Please post your Garmin Astro Range and Terrain that your range is being hunted in.

I have seen quite a few extremes on ranges and terrains on the system and was interested in trying to compile a list of what everyone is getting out their system in range and the terrain it's being used.

3/4-1 Mile on rolling hills. Vegitation is average, trees are hardwood with plenty of open sky viewing. In dense swamp I get 1/4 mile even with clear sky.

Thick terrain-- briefly (20-60 seconds) lose reception when dog is underneath real woody messes. Swimming-never lost reception.
Rocky terrain with dips in the ground--never lost reception.

Dog has never traveled more than 7/10th of a mile from me so I have no idea what distance would lose reception. I have clear reception when he is sitting in my pick-up cab, though I'm never far away at all when he's in there.

Forgot to add--I used the snub-nose antenna.

spring/summer range 800 yds occasionally .5 miles/terrain thick bottoms and rolling hills

same spot
winter range 2 miles consistanly

from my experience hills seem to have less effect than dense woods, granted i haven't been around the large mountains as most, but i'd bet the farm on the thick cover... these ranges are with the handheld unit and aftermarket antenna

2.0 miles in hardwoods and evergreens with overhead cover- rolling hills Sometimes as they get closer to the steeper sections of a side hill the signal gets lost till they get out of it. We've had NO trouble in our thick swamps- blueberry, Rhodadedron (sp?) hemlock, tamerack. We get further range, but that's pretty consistent.
Our problem has been with the collars rotating and the lack of confidence in the extermal antenna not breaking, and of course having to electrical tape the base plate cause it will break otherwise. Paul Conway.

1.5 miles consistantly in sperodic timber patches, heavy brush and steep canyons. Clouds did not seem to matter.

I can think of a couple reasons off the top of my head:

1. Some of us use the snub-nose antenna as opposed to the long antenna or the wrap-around antenna.

2. With each of us living in different parts of the country, what one person might call "thick brush" another might consider "medium brush." Definitely when LCK or many of us in the Rockies say "rocky terrain" we mean something waaaayyy different than somebody in Indiana saying "rocky terrain."

we get about 1.5 miles max here in east Texas in clearcuts and river bottom in the winter is when we get 1.5 in heavy veg. we only get around .7 to .8 sometimes a little more others a whole lot less

mine was never tested past 1.5 miles on the dogs here in michigan, however a hunting partner recently tested his unit by leaving it on the back deck of his cabin in northern michigan and he drove off in his truck and went 6-7 miles before he lost it.  I'll take mine up there to try the same test to confirm this. seeing is beleiving.
