scents are no good...best way to train a puppy with a drag is get up one morning and ride the roads and find a fresh road kill..they seem to work the best if you cant get ahold of a fresh killed coon..

Walker1195. I have a Walker & a Plott pup both 10 months old now. I let them with a friend in WV for 2 months to run loose when they were 3 month old till they were 5 months old. They were treeing squirrels well when I picked them up. I showed them a coon in a roll cage once and left one go for them. At 10 months they are both doing great on coon. The Walker kept treeing squirrels for about a month after but did stop. The Plott just didn't bother & at 10 months he split treed twice in the last 2 weeks by himself with the coon. Actually both times the other dogs also had a coon. But I don't think starting on squirrels hurt them at all.

Like some of these guys already said, don't use scent. Find a FRESH road kill and skin it. You can't beat the real thing and its much cheaper! I like to vacuum seal them and freeze them. I'll thaw one out use it for 10 or 15 minutes then re-freeze it.
