I use a nice straight hardwood sapling. Find one that has a nice bend to it just under the ground before the roots. Cut the sapling off after digging down a few inches. That natural curl underground at the butt makes a great curved handle. Skin it or leave the bark on it and walk away!! Leave it out on the porch when you go in the house so it drys slow and you'll have a good comfortable stick for years.

I hunt with a guy, about 67 or 68. Not as old as I am, and he has 3 hanging in back of his mule, that is made from 3/4 pvc. A couple straight pieces, a 90, and a couple end caps. He also has a couple in the back of his hunting truck. He uses one every time we leave the vehicle. I don't use one but it looks pretty handy and easy made to me.

we hunt next to the ohio river walk the banks a lot while hunting so i have made several out of drift wood and a lot of them have been chewed on by a beaver or 2 give it a nice look, most of the time the bark is off, lite and strong, but the best i have come across is from wall-mart for about 18 or 20 bucks its adjustable and has held up 2 years now looks like a ski pole. i got back problems and a bumed knee and no feel in one leg and foot,(from back surgey) and a walking stick is the only way i can get around in the woods...but got to keep coon huntn somehow just go a lot slower lol.

My grandpa made me one out of iron wood. Just like Canadian hillbilly said, cut it underground where root starts going crooked and it makes nice handle. He also carved it to make it look like a duck head just for looks. He put some waterproof varnish or something on it so the weather doesn't get to it to bad. I've had it for 5 years now and it still looks good. Really helps when hunting real hilly places or crossing creeks and rivers
