im having serious problems sharpening my mini trapper. i bought it 2 weeks ago and ive skinned some coon and squirrel with it and its dull now. maybe im not bein patient enough but surely i will get the hang of it. ive never used a stone to sharpen and that may be the problem. |

a flat wet stone with a light dab of 3 in 1 oil.hold the stone flat and stroke the blade toward the blade edge as though you were shaving the stone. the angle is the whole trick. |

if you attend any gun and knife shows ,look for the old man sharpening knives for 2 bucks a blade. its worth that just to watch him do it so you 'll be a pro at it too w/practice.. but be careful. soon as your friends see you can do it,you'll be doing thiers more then your own. |

i may have to go check one of them out.. yeah if i learn it real good it'll be my little secret.. haha ive got a lansky ordered for christmas. hopefully that'll make it a breeze. |

One of the nice things about living in Bradford, Pa (home of Case Knives) is I can take any Case knife to the visitor center and have it sharpened for free while I wait. The factory sharpened edge seems to last a long time. |

on that stone toe cutter was talking pull that blade 23 degrees,and I use a rough side of leather with jewellers rouge and use the smooth side of the leather to finish it out,I have several cases you can shave with,I got a 2" stick about 12" long glued a piece of rough leather on one side, smooth on the other. if you don't hold that blade a the right angle you will scratch the whole blade and ruin the sale of it. on the rough side just rub you rouge all over it. |

i usually sharpen my own but a week or so ago i was at a gun & knife show/trade day swap meet or what ever and i had a guy sharpen all 3 blades on my pocket knife for 2 bucks. razor sharp. he used the smallest lil belt sander of a thing and then a lil buffing wheel. pretty slick set up. |

Those little belt sander sharpeners are pretty neat and I have heard some good reviews about them. I have never personally used one. I just use a stone and water to sharpen mine. I kind of have a collection of old USA made Schrades, and it usually doesn't take long and you can shave your arm with them. One thing to remember is you have to keep an even bevel edge, so if you stroke a knife down a stone on one side alternate to the other side each stroke. I had my fold-out Uncle Henry razor sharp, but after one deer, it didn't have the same nice edge it did when cleaning the second, so maybe I have no idea how to put an edge on a knife the correct way. |

ceramic rod, hold blade as if your trying to shave the rod. bout 23 degrees.. will shave a bullfrog after only 9 or 10 strokes.. |

My dad had a knife when I was a kid, it was a case single blade about 6 inches long +\- . It also had a thing clamped on the blade to make it prolly one of the first one handed open knives avalible. That was 30 years ago,, Posted using Outdoor Hub Campfire hi j. actually the first one hand opening knife was called a one armed bandit, they had a notch in the end of the main blade so you could catch it on your pocket and open it. made right them after the civil war because of so many one armed men coming home. if you had any idea what pattern your dads knife was i could probly find you one. another place to look is on ebay. just type in one bladed case knife and look through the listing pics till you see it. they have different listings too if you type in vintage folding case knife or whatever in the ebay search box. i think what you're looking for is called a slimline trapper with a thumb catch easy opener. you will more en likely see the one you described in one of the ebay venues for case pocket knives. |
