All the updates I've downloaded on mine were free. I'm pretty sure you Have to have the Webupdater downloaded and go through that. I'ts pretty much plug and play from there. You hook your astro in to usb, it'll tell you what software you have and whats the newest one it'll update. To update your collar is a little bit tricky lol. If you haven't done so already maybe this will get you on right track.

Go to dog page where it shows you the battery level, frequency, and signal strength
Hit menu
The next page will come up with options, at the bottom it will say update collar. I think its the last option.

The collar will update through the hand held so it will need to be hooked to the computer.

The rest is like updating your hand held.

If you want to help save your battery's while hunting, go to the same page where you found the option to update the collar and look for the common setting. Should be the second option.

This is where you can change the I.D. number and how soon the collar refreshes it self while hunting. The factory setting is 5 seconds.
You can change it to 30 seconds and help prolong the battery life.
