Hunting last night, and the dogs caught a big boar coon on the ground. Thought we were going to have to shoot the coon before it killed our dogs. It was one heck of a fight. The dogs got so winded that they would take turns resting while the other dog fought. This is my first ground catch. How many of you have experienced this?
There was 2 coons that was in briars with a tree that had fallen down in the briars and the coons were hiding under the fallen tree. The dogs would go under the tree with only the 1 boar running the dogs back. Finally the coon got out far enough and the dogs jumped on it. We figured that since it was the rut was why there was 2, and on the ground. We didn't bother the other coon figuring that it was a female.
The young ones I've caught were in thick brush and briars but by the time I got to em the dogs pretty well had em done in. But I think the biggest one was only about 6-8 pounds
I've had it happen a few times. It's hard on a dog that doesn't learn how to finish a coon. The worst is when they catch one in water. It can get bad and get bad fast.
I know a guy that got one on a creek bank the dogs caught him right at the edge of the water he broke loose got in the water and it killed his dog they said that the 2.5 mile walk back was rough carryin the dead dog
In Dec. one of the local hunt clubs had a big coon constest, and we got one that weighed 16.2 lbs, and this coon was pushing at least 12-14 lbs guessing. I guess if a big coon got the dogs in the water they could kill a dog.
