For you guys that are hunting these swampy areas do you have to give your dogs any special shots to keep them healthy from mosquitos or any other bug/parasite?
I ask because where i coon hunt theres tons of mosquitos out now.
thanks,

With mosquitos I worry about heartworms. Heartguard gives 6 doses for the same price as Advantage's 3 doses. Advantage protects against more parasites though. Need to get a heartworm test before you can start those medications. I give heartguard most of the year but switch over to advantage during the highest mosquito times.

One word of caution. Advantage will only semi-repel mosquitos for about 10 days, and does nothing really to prevent heartworms. Like MTCoonHunter said your biggest worry with mosquitos is heartworms, so your best bet is to have them on heartworm preventative like heartgard. Im not sure that I understand taking a dog off heartgard and switching to advantage, but giving the combo would be a great idea.

What works good for you all to keep mosquitos out of your backyard and kennel area?

Hey all I live in North Carolina by a lake. I have sprayed my yard but the mosquitos are still thick as thiefs. My poor Bluetick gets covered with these little bastards and I just don't know what to do to get rid of them or at very least keep them off him. ANY ideas??

This will not wipe them all out but get you some purple martin houses. and take care of the birds and they will help take care of you. They eat alot of SKEETERS.

You can also encourage bats and dragon flies. They really put a dent in the mosquito population. Also, put some kind of flap on the dog's house. If the opening is covered with something thick like a piece of carpet the dog will learn quickly that if it goes inside they get knocked off and can't get inside the dog house very well. It will give the dog a lot more protection than an open dog house.

Does anyone buy their heartguard etc... online from the Canadian drug stores? My dad has been doing this for a while and I think I may start.

I give ivermectin 1/10 of a cc for ten lbs of body weight for heart worm prevention. I get it at the local farm store for cattle and swine. I live on the Grand River so they are always a issue. I use Bayer lawn granules and also Bayer that attaches to the hose and spray my lawn around the kenell. Fly traps help with mosquitoes and flies also. I even spyay the dogs down with Bronco it's for horses, but works on dogs too.

Im a vet tech and I also use ivermectin. I use the injectable cattle version and while you do use 1/10 cc or 1/10 ml per 10lbs of body weight you never want to go over 1/2 a cc or 1/2 ml it could lead to an overdose. And NEVER give our dog the horse version it is way to strong I have seen many cases of overdoses with the horse version, including safeguard, it can cause permanent neurological damage if the dog even lives through it.
