Vets can do doggy abortions, no idea what the cost is. If people have the morning after pill (you have up to 3 days on that) then there might be something the vet can prescribe for the dog.

THere is a shot that can be given within 72 hours of mating that will nulify the breeding. It will cause the female to restart the heat process.
The shot is not as ready available as it use to be.

The shot given is a prostaglandin, called lutalyse, or also prostamate to name a couple. About 5cc in the muscle about 72hrs. after. It is a prescription product that is not sold over the counter. I use it on dairy cattle to actually bring cows into heat. Not 100%, and becareful not to abuse it, can cause cancer if over used in your hounds!

Thats right in that you can use lutalyse to abort a dog if you give it early. The only thing I would add is that its not a one time 5cc shot like you would give a cow. Its a lower dose, and it works best if you give it every 6 hours for about 2 days. The down side is that it is a pretty ugly and painful process. Thats why a lot of vets prefer to spay the dog, or if they do use lutalyse, they keep the dog in the clinic for monitoring and usually give IV fluids. I would strongly advise against anyone doing this at home.

Just have the pups.
Had the shot given a few years back on one and if I had to re-do it all over, I'd take my chances on an accidental breeding as the shot messed up the dog mentally -- the dog was never right in the head after the shot.
I have heard others have similar results from the shot.

I actually just went to the vet today because I had an unplanned hookup between my two curs. Not that the cross wouldn't be a good one, but I don't really want to have pups born in January here in December. Anyways, I went to the vet and he gave me a 3cc shot of Estradial Cypionate, which is a potent Estrogen hormone from what I've read. It cost me about $25 for the shot. The vet told me there wasn't much of a chance of side effects, but there was a possibility her uterus might get filled with puss, and to watch if she was drinking a lot more water than normal. Well, I wanted to do some research before I administered the shot, and from what I've been reading, I'm really questioning even giving it anymore. Anyone familiar with this shot?

I'm not trying to be rude but if my vet told me there was not much chance of side effects but the possibility of pyometra (uterus filled with pus) I wouldn't let him /her treat a dead guppy. Pyometra is deadly and usually requires emergency surgery to save the dog by spaying it. The abortion shots are dangerous and it's safer to have a litter or surgically abort the pups.
