I use ivermectin for my hounds, but if you have a mixed breed dog with any shepherd or long hair dog it will kill them dead I don't know why. I just know from experience.
It is the collie breeds that have a bad reaction to Ivermectin sometimes. Any of the collies (sheepdogs, shelties, briards, etc.) can be carrying a gene that makes them have a problem with it. I've read there is a test to identify if your dog has the gene but it doesn't seem to be much of a problem since there are other heartworm medicines that they don't have a problem with. If it is a collie the vet will usually just prescribe an alternative to Ivermectin to be on the safe side. It is considered something to be careful of if you use a standard heartworm treatment for dogs because at the correct dose they don't *usually* have a problem. When you get into mixing your own you don't really know if you are going over that dosage limit that a collie breed will have a problem with. With other breeds you have a lot of leeway in the dosage before you run into a problem.
i use zimecterin gold,a dab rolled in a piece of bread once a month. the reason i use this is because it will kill all 3 types of tapeworms that dogs get along with preventing heartworms. good stuff
that ZIMECTRIN GOLD, if i bought one tub of it, then how long do you think it would last for five dogs? And what type of worms will it take care of?
mike.
how much and how often do you worm with zimectrin gold for tape worms.and also I have just wormed my dog with panacur last week, will it hurt to give the tape worm treatment this soon
Vet told me to use the size of a pencil eraser regardless of the size of the dog. I smear it on a piece of pepperoni and they gobble it up. Vet said nothing about it killing a collie dog or any other kind of dog, but he did say if the dog has heart worms it will kill the dog most likely. One tube of paste does 1250lbs so it lasts a year at least in the fridge. about nine bucks at tractor supply.
