What is a good protien & fat percentage for an active coon hound? I know people who are serious about physical fitness do not need a diet with a high percentage of fat. It seems dogs need much more but how much?

A dog is only as good as the man's word that's selling it.

He is a 4 yr old Bluetick. He was getting hunted about 3 days per week but the last couple of weeks we have slowed down. Most of the trees he made were fairly short trips. One night it took about 2-3 miles to track down his reward. He seems perfectly healthly, alert, & attentive.

The fat and protein content of dog food is relevent to the digestablility of the ingredients. You could have 2 dog foods that are 26% protein and 18% fat and you would think you are getting the same feed, but that is not nessecarily the case. Dogs can only metabolize what their system can digest. Energy in dog food is measured by Kcals (kilocalories) per cup. Most feeds will give this information on the bag or their websites or at least they should. There should be 2 listings of Kcals/cup. One should be total Kcals and the other should be Metabolizable kcals. Most of the natural dog foods contain no corn and the energy is more metabolizable than those containing corn. I'm not saying you should'nt feed those containing corn simply because I'm aware of the cost involved. However, sometimes the cost of an expensive feed may be more, simply because they are not as digestable and the dogs require a greater quantity. With all of that being said, you've asked a question that is very difficult to answer except by trial and error on your particular dogs.

I hunt my dog a good bit and I was wondering what amount of protien and fat should the feed have. I hunt him at least 3 nights a week

i feed sportmix 24/20 and dogs do good on it

i feed 27 protein,i hunt every night i can, i watch there stole, make sure they have no problems, i have notice if i got buy cheaper food they don't hunt as well, not saying u should buy the best but , during the season it makes a different, changing to different feeds all the time i think messes with there system, i just got for high protein, and dogs i don't hunt but one night i feed less protein, i mostly just watch how they hunt and how they act, but i know in the summer u can burn them up, just go with what seems to work the best good luck guys and gals,

i know every dogs different but i have the best luck with joy high energy 24/20 when its cooler out and im running them most every night. and in the summer i feed joy maintenance

My question is should you change a hounds diet when warmer weather gets here? Say for instant less crude fat and protien in hot weather. I know there are some experianced houndsmen on this site daily lookin to read some feedback.

You can either feed less or go with lower fat. If I fed my dogs as much in the summer as I do winter they'd be bowling balls.
