Have a one year old dog who just came into her first heat cycle. She is incredibly swollen. Size of a large apple! Went out the other day to the kennels to feed, and she had prelapsed. Prelapsed meaning that her vagina was basically turned inside out, and hanging out of her. Took her to the vet and basically pushed it back in and sewed it shut. Has anyone ever had this happen to your dogs in heat. Vet said she will more than likely need to be spayed. I had great hopes for this dog producing fast starting pups, but obviously i will do whats best for her. Any thoughts are appreciated :)

Thanks!

Most times yes they have to be spayed.

If her insides have come out there is a good chance of it happening again, especially with the extra internal weight and pressure of carrying a growing litter of pups. Any straining on her part can cause it to happen again, even a difficult bowel movement. That's why it is best to spay her. If you really still want to breed her talk to your vet and see if he/she thinks it can be done safely and if it can then follow the vet's advice religiously every step of the way. It is very likely that if she does carry a litter to term she will prolapse again when pushing to deliver the pups.

You run the risk of passing this genetic defect on to her puppies as well if you breed her. In cases like this people should just bite the bullet and take their losses. To breed this dog would be very irresponsible and it can even be deadly to the bitch in some cases.

My cousin had a female do that,he didn't fix her and she never done it again and she lived to be 12. I got a friend that had a female did the same and she never repeated it.I would let her come in heat the second time before I would do anything, but now that's just me.
