Post subject:  When to run after pregnancy

We have a female dog that dropped a litter of 10 big game pups. The pups are a little over two weeks old. What I would like to know is when would be an o.k. time to start running the female again? Will she go dry if we keep her out too long?

I personally wait until they are weaned and she has started to dry up.. Big argument between me and my boyfriend.. I just informed him, How would you like them boobies slapping you in the legs and all the brush (we live in Oregon).. I am afraid she would rip a nipple or something like that.. Chances are slim.. but slim chances always seem to find me...

Not until you wean them.. Our were weaned at 5-6 weeks and now at 8-9 weeks she has dried up pretty well.. Not completely sucked back up yet but she has been runnable for a week and a half or so....

I agree. They can get some nasty injuries from briars and sharp sticks. Also, they are using up an incredible amount of calories, vitamins, and minerals just by feeding the pups. It puts an additional nutritional strain on the dog to be out running if she doesn't have to. Wait till they are weaned. You can usually start putting out moistened food at around 5 weeks and wean them at 6 or 7 weeks if they are eating the food without any trouble. 10 pups is a big litter and they'll be draining her energy as long as they are nursing. Another thing to think about is that every time you turn one loose may be the last. If something bad happens to her are you prepared to bottle feed 10 pups? Good luck with them.

This is the first hound I have ever had pups out of and she is wanting to get back in the woods. I don't want to take her out to soon though. Thanks in advance for any help.

I would not hunt the female until you have weaned the pups and she has dried up good you could mess her bags up and have trouble later if you breed her back. I no guys that have hunted them had em hit something while hunting and mess up there bags They learned the hard way.

Wondering if you can hunt a dog while she has pups on her and if so how old should the pups be before taking her and how long can she be away from them? Thanks

I agree.. wait til a few weeks after she is done nursing so she dries up or you can cause some serious damage and cause infection
