Hotspots (also called pyotraumatic dermatitis) are most of the time secondary to another problem, most often allergies (fleas, food, environment.) It is cause when there is a change in the dogs immune system of some kind that often opens the door for bugs to infect the shallow layers of the dogs skin. Most often it is a secondary bacterial infection (often staph) and is pretty easy to treat. Once you figure out if there is a cause, such as allergies, then you treat to correct that and the hotspots will often go away. In the mean time it is very helpful to clean and maybe even shave around the hot spot. Keep it clean with an antibacterial soap and you can also apply topical antimicrobials like panalog or neosporin. The biggest part of the time the animal will not have to have systemic anitibiotics but there is a possibility. Two important things to remember are to see your vet before you give antibiotics because sometimes these skin bacteria can be very resistant to common antibiotics (s.a. penicillins) and you may do more harm than good if you treat with the wrong drug. The other thing is to never put steroids on these skin wounds. If it is infact a bacteria or fungal infection steroids will make it a lot worse.

sulfur powder mixed with baby oil - mix into a thin paste - coat affected areas.
wallmart carries sulfur powder. (USP sublimed sulfur powder)
tractor supply (TSC) carries nu stock cream in the horse dept. it contains 73% sulfur.

Post subject:  hott spot or ???

I got a 4yr old walker male that ive owned for about a year, he started gettn sore places on his back leg right around the ankle and small spots show up in random areas but arent as big as the one on the ankle and he is constantly irritating it and ive tried numerous meds to fix this problem but to no success, Ive heard of dogs getting hot spots but have never encountered this problem with any of my other dogs. Is it a hot spot or what could this be and how can i fix this problem??. would take him to the vet but i believe he was mistreated by the previous owner and is alittle ill when it comes to strangers so have stayed away from that situation until i feel hes more social.. any info would be appreciated.
