I would like to know what you recommend on drying a female up.
I want to keep her from being baggie looking.

The safest way is time. Any time you give a dog medication/hormones to alter a natural process you risk something going wrong. Keep her completely off the pups and make sure she gets plenty of exercise and stays fit. Don't let her just sit in the kennel all day and she should tighten up just fine. I would avoid thorny areas until she is back to normal to prevent her from getting snagged on something and hurting herself.

I heard someone say to help dry her up is to withhold water and feed for 24-48 hrs.
I was real curious

This is a very bad time of year to think about keeping your dog from water. Dogs always need fresh, clean water and keeping her from water at this time of year would be dangerous to her.

Anyone else want to jump in here? I wouldn't recommend it. It might help her dry up faster but only because she'd have nothing to make milk with. I can't say from experience because it just isn't something I would do.

could you go without food or water for 24 - 48 hours? probably not. i know that i can never go to bed knowing my animals whether it be my horses, goats or dogs have not eatin or theres a chance of them not having water. there is no way to dry up a dog faster than just letting it happen!

I did not say I was going to make her due without Water and feed.
My dogs are better taken care than most kids.
They even have AC if it gets to Hot.
Thank you all for your input.
I had heard of people doing that. Didn't say I was going to.

Hmmmm...we had a similar post last year. If I remember correctly it got close to needing some sort of parental warning, lol. I can tell you this from personal experience - when pups, foals, pigs, deer, humans, etc. are weaned anything that touches the dam's teats can stimulate milk production to begin again. Just leave the dog's belly alone, untouched, and keep the pups away from her and she will dry up just fine.

Arachyd is correct, leave it alone and let the milk dry on it's own. If you are trying to prevent the sagging look, wait until the milk is dried up and the belly has had time to heal and then rub cocoa butter lotion on her stomach every day for a few weeks and it will tighten right back up with no problems.

The best way to dry up a female....The night before you take her from the pups .Take away the water and feed. The next day..Day (1) no food or water for 24 hrs.Day (2) give back her water and 1/4th the feed she got before she was bred .Day (3) 1/2 her feed.Day (4) 3/4 Day (5) full feed...What this does is stops her milk production...Ive been doing this for 30 years ..Most of my females have had 3 or more litters.......but you cant tell it by looking at them......
